Inspired by New York. Made in Glasgow.

Healthy. Tasty. Casual. Roll with it at Temaki Glasgow.
Far East meets Mexican as we bring our street food to Glasgow’s city centre.

Prepare to have a new CRUSH. Sushi Burritos are our thing. Hell, it’s ONE serious food crush we have and believe us when we say that you won’t taste anything like these elsewhere, anywhere. It’s all your taste buds ever wanted.

Event Date : Thursday 12th January 2017

I was lucky to get invited to tonight’s blogger event, I had heard of Temaki but only that it was opening soon in Glasgow. I saw a few things on Twitter, but then nothing till this invite which I was so glad I did as I was looking forward to trying here.

Before attending I was sent the menu via email, I had a quick glance and it sounded very nice. One item was the Sushi Burrito which stood out to me and was a must-have to try.

IMG_4626.jpg

On arrival the first thing I noticed was its location, I knew the restaurants on either side but I couldn’t think what was there before…still don’t know. Another thing I noticed was it was a small location, but I soon learned this was intentional (you will find out later)

On entering we were greeted by the owner and shown to our table, and given the menu for the evening.

I had a quick count and Temaki can seat about 25 to 30 people, as I said it was a quick count so it’s somewhere around that number.

The Food

As you will see below its a lot of food tonight, luckily I was hungry so I was looking forward to it.

Salmon Sashimi, Maki, Nigiri Spicy Kimchi Edamame

SUSHI BURRITO TO SHARE

Roasted shredded crispy duck with cucumber, cabbage, avocado, crispy onions, and hoisin sauce, wrapped in seaweed and hand
rolled with sushi rice

CHILLI CHICKEN RAMEN

A signature noodle staple

YAKI MOCHI

Green Tea Ice cream

DRINKS

Hite beer
Jun Maidai Daiginjo Sake
Eastern Rickey
Yuzi Sour

Starters :

Salmon Sashimi, Maki, Nigiri Spicy Kimchi Edamame & Sushi Burrito

I started with Sushi, and you can’t really go wrong with Sushi. It was nice and fresh and I loved every mouthful.

Now, this was what I was looking forward to the Sushi Burrito!!!

The Sushi Burrito is set to be one of this year’s biggest health food trends, and I can see why.

I loved this and could have had more!!! it had all the flavours I loved and more. The duck flavour added that extra taste that enhanced what was already nice and tasty.

If you visit Temaki DO try this!!!

Main :

Chilli Chicken Ramen

I have never had Ramen, I have only ever heard of it.

img_4611

This was very nice, I asked for the milder one as I am not too good with very spicy food. Unfortunately, I had to leave most of it, not due to the taste but more due to my lack of Chopstick skills. I am sure I would have finished it all if I could use chopsticks.

Dessert :

Green Tea Icecream

img_4618

I have never been a fan of any kind of tea, but one ice cream flavour I have never tried is Green Tea. For me, this was just ok, but other people there who like Green Tea loved this so do give it a try if you like the flavour of Green Tea.

Drink :

Eastern Rickey Cocktail

33F031F9-103E-44D8-BF8B-0E1B4C53BC58.jpg

I can’t remember what was in this cocktail apart from Lychee, so it was a very nice and refreshing cocktail.

This was a perfect choice of cocktail for tonight, as there were a few spicy dishes so this just worked well with them.

..

The Owner

After the meal, I managed to get a little time to talk to the owner. The owner’s name is Kasia and she is a lovely girl.

The idea for Temaki was from her experiences in New York and San Francisco, and the Ramen was from her visits to Asia. Kasia had tried many Sushi Burritos when in NY and SF, and thought why is nobody doing this over here….and thats where Temaki comes in.

As soon as Kasia tried the Sushi burrito at these places, she knew she wanted to bring it to Glasgow.

As I said this location only seats 25 to 30 people has another good reason, Kasia said that she always felt that when one person went out to eat it looked awkward. So having this layout where your sit at a bench or a long table etc and close to others, helps reduce that and gives a nice cosy atmosphere.

Kasia is very passionate about Temaki and I have the feeling this place will do very well, I will be going back as I fell in love with the Sushi Burrito.

Overall :

Overall I had a fantastic night and fantastic food.

At the time of writing this post, Temaki does not have an alcohol license. They are aiming to try and get one, but please don’t let that put you off going here.

I would like to thank Temaki for the invite and thank Kasia for the little chat.

You will see me soon so get the Sushi burritos ready 🙂

Poco Havana Bar & Cantina Mexican Restaurant (Glasgow) : Review

48a West Regent Street
G2 2RA Glasgow

Tel : 0141 353 6098

Visit Date : 4th December 2016

This weekend I fancied having a Mexican for my style of food, and I opted to go back to Poco Havana.

My last visit to Poco Havana was 20th November 2016 and this was the review for then VIEW

Tonight I did try different dishes, as I am trying hard not to have the same thing every time. Again just like last time, we were welcomed and shown to a table. The staff have always been very pleasant and very helpful and it was the same tonight.

Starters :

BBQ’D SWEETCORN   £3.50
“rolled in brown butter panko crumb, manchego and paprika”

The sweetcorn was very nice, biting in to it the cobs were coming off nice and easy. The flavour was good, and the crumb topping was very nice. It not a spicy topping, the paprika just adds a little flavour you taste more of the manchego than paprika.

Everything about this worked, and I would order this again.

POCO NACHOS GF £4.95
“tortilla chips with melted mozzarella, salsa, sour cream and jalapenos
Add guacamole £1. Add almost death sauce £1″

Yes I know I got these the last time, but for me these have been the best nachos I have tasted in any Mexican restaurant so far in Glasgow.

Main :

GORDITAS (POCO BURGER) GF £7.95
“crispy open taco stuffed with chipotle pork, salsa fresca, cheese, crema and fresh coriander”

Yip so not really what you would call a burger visually, but this is loaded with great flavours and every mouthful did not get boring after a while. I would really recommend this if you try Poco Havana, and I would have this again!

Dessert :

Fried Jamaica cake £4.95
“chargrilled bananas, spiced rum toffee sauce and whipped demerara coffee cream with crushed Oreos”

When I saw the menu this was a must, as you know I have been attending monthly rum clubs so a Jamaican rum cake was the one to order.

This was so good, packed with flavour and every mouthful was so so good. If I wasn’t full after tonight’s meals and this cake, I would have ordered another one.

Finishing Cocktail :

Overall :

This visit for me was a lot better than my first, mostly due to I really enjoyed everything a lot from the food, dessert and the cocktail. Don’t get me wrong my first visit was good, but I enjoyed what I ordered more this time round.

The one thing I must point out, is once a dish is ready its just brought out. Tonight I had starters and my main sitting on the table, if this isn’t for you maybe ask them to hold the mains back till your ready.

Poco Havana Bar & Cantina (Glasgow) : Review

48a West Regent Street
G2 2RA Glasgow

0141 353 6098

Visit Date : 20th August 2016

Poco Havana is another new restaurant that opened in Glasgow in 2016, it’s opening was March the 18th and you can find more details about them on Facebook, their website and why not follow them on Twitter and Instagram.

I had been recommended by the staff at Obu Pan Asian, and via their twitter account to try here so I finally did.

There are several Latin American restaurants in Glasgow e.g. Topolabamba and Las Iguanas are two I have already tried. If you want my thoughts on them send me a tweet and I will let you know.

First Impressions :

Poco Havana is a very cosy little restaurant, and has a very unique theme compared to the other latin american restaurants in Glasgow that I have tried. There is themed music playing and unlike Topolabamba it’s not too loud where you need to shout over it and everyone else in the restaurant. Having to shout over music in places is a big no, it kills your enjoyment of the meal and who you are with but here the level was perfect.

It had just enough atmosphere which was good, and was very relaxing. The staff were all very friendly, and the waitress this night was very helpful.

The Food :

I am not a big Latin American food person, so this style of food is not something I have on a regular basis but I do enjoy it when I have it. Tonight I decided to try several small plates, so I could sample a few dishes and then the next time order one small and one large.

HUARACHAS CON CHORIZO: A CORN MASSA SANDAL WITH A SPICY MIX OF CHORIZO AND POTATO, FINISHED WITH FRESH AVOCADO, CREMA AND CORIANDER £4.95

1jbgmbnon47uabsh-oy2cag

This was very nice, everything about this just worked. It was a great portion size, and the flavours all complimented each other.

PRAWN AND AVOCADO TOSTADAS: PAN FRIED PRAWNS WITH GARLIC AND CHILLI, WITH A PINEAPPLE AND AVOCADO SALSA ON FRIED MINI CORN TORTILLAS £5.95

For me this was just ok, I really don’t know what I was expecting. The flavours for me were interesting and did work, but I don’t know if I would try this again. The prawns were warm whereas the rest of the plate was cold, so I don’t know if that was it or that it was missing something. Please don’t let this put you off trying it, as this is my opinion remember.

HOME MADE TORTILLA CHIPS AND GUACAMOLE: GUACAMOLE MADE FRESH TO ORDER, SERVED WITH OUR HOME MADE CORN TORTILLAS £4.50

This was a small plate, but wow its bigger than some of the other Latin American restaurants large plates. Out of all the tortilla chips I have tried, I really enjoyed this one the most and could have easily gone another plate but that would have just been too greedy after all the other ones.

Churros with rock salt and lemon sorbet. The churros were heavier and harder than expected as I have tried churros in many restaurants, but they were nice and the sorbet was really really good. I would have this again when I return.

Overall :

Overall for me this was a very good first time, the food, service etc all were very good and I had a nice time and nice meal. Would I go back? Yes, I would as Poco had for me the best parts of both Topolabamba and Las Iguanas, nice food, music just right level and good relaxing atmosphere.
