Salt & Chilli Oriental (West End, Glasgow) : Review

Salt & Chilli Oriental is from award-winning TV and Lychee Oriental chef Jimmy Lee, and its aim is to serve the best Cantonese street food.

The Takeaway

I have known Jimmy Lee for many years now, as I used to frequent his Glasgow restaurant Lychee Oriental which I highly recommend you check out as its always amazing food and the staff are lovely.

Jimmy sent me a wee message to come and visit Salt and Chilli for a takeaway and I couldn’t wait to try the food as I am sure its just as amazing as the food from Lychee Oriental.

The Goodies

The smell from these were amazing and I couldn’t wait to open them and dig right in.

Crispy Duck Rolls £n/a (normally £5.50)
Handmade 24hr Marinated Duck

Firstly as I said earlier in this post, the smells were amazing and mega mouth-watering.

I first tried one on its own with no dip, so I could taste the full flavour. WOW it was a perfect bite, had a nice little crunch, and then the flavour of the duck explodes in your mouth it was so good.

Now time to try with the dip, oh wow this adds another dimension to the flavour and for me this was the winning combo for me so so so good.

I could have easily had much much more of this, but I had the salt and chilli box to follow 🙂

My Rating :

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Salt & Chilli Box (Inc Dip and Side) : Special £n/a (normally £11)
Wings | Rib | Chicken & Fries

As soon as I opened this box the smell hit me mmmmm everything looked and smelled good….now time to taste.

I started with the chips, firstly thin chips are always a win for me and these were very nice and had a good kick to them.

Next was the ribs, these had a really nice flavour and the meat slide right off the bone.

Lastly was the wings, again really nice flavour and perfectly cooked.

My Rating :

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Wudon (West End, Glasgow) : Review

V: 14th November 2020

I have passed here many times on my walks in the West End, and always wanted to take a visit.

Today I did that, and here is what I thought.

Venue

Inside has a very nice modern and very relaxing design and atmosphere, today I was seated at the window so I could enjoy my meal while people watching.

The Food

I didn’t really know what to order as it all sounded very good, so it was a random selection and it was a good one.

katsu ga lay fan

Chicken Katsu £9.50

Mild Japanese curry sauce, steamed sticky white rice

I have had Katsu Chicken Curry before, but it was ages ago and I cant remember from what restaurant.

I thought lets try it here and see how it is.

The chicken was very tender, super tasty and the sauce and the sticky rice all were a perfect combination.

This was a big portion, and you get a load of rice with this…..I really enjoyed this 🙂

Kamo maki *new*

£4.50

This one sounded interesting.

WOW WOW WOW is all I can say, the flavour of this was just amazing! I could have easily had another 3 portions of this.

This is new on their menu at the time I am typing this, so please take a visit and try this!

Ap Soong

£6.00

I was told to try this today, as its very nice…it sounded very strange but interesting at the same time.

So you get a lettuce leaf, pout the contents inside and use that as your bun? not sure if thats the right word but thats it.

This was actually really good, and a cool way to eat. The flavours all worked together and the lettuce added a nice little crunch giving you a nice texture.

Visit Overall :

I am so glad I finally visited Wudon, I had a great visit and had really good food.

The stand out part of the meal was the Kamo Maki, I LOVED the flavours of this so much.

I am adding here to my top places to visit, and I will visit again.

Home by Nico “Cooking Bangkok Thai Street Food” : Review⠀

GIFTED

The guys at Home by Nico asked if I would like to receive their Bangkok box to try, and do a wee review I gladly accepted and looked forward to the delivery.

With Home by Nico’s cooking at home experience, the menu changes monthly so that you are always exploring new cuisines from around the world. If you are vegetarian don’t worry, as they have a vegetarian experience to.

Within the box there is an easy instruction book, which I found super simple to follow so if I can manage so can anyone. ⠀

With the Home by Nico experience, there is full UK wide delivery, so where ever you stay you can enjoy a great meal at home and experience food from around the world. The best part is once your order has been delivery it can be stored in the fridge for 48 hours before you eat it, so you can always save it for some weekend cooking 🙂

£60 inc delivery (4 course menu and a bottle of wine for two)⠀

The delivery

As you can see its a massive box, and extremely well laid out, great presentation and probably the best home delivery you will ever see as I can’t fault anything about it.

What I got in the box : ⠀

  • Menu⠀
  • Cooking “Bangkok” cooking instructions booklet⠀
  • Your starter, main, sides and dessert⠀

Obviously, depending on the month the style of food will be different but this month was Bangkok.⠀

Starter

Tom Yum Soup

I have never had Tom Yum Soup before, so I was looking forward to try this.⠀

I opened my cooking guide book and followed the instructions, as this was heating up the smell was amazing and my mouth started to water.

After the given time, and a few tastes to see if it was warm enough I poured it into a bowl and sat down to enjoy my soup.⠀

This was sooo good and I am not just saying that the flavour was really nice and it had a small kick. I could have easily had more of this, and could easily have this on a regular basis and that’s saying something as I am not really a soup fan but this was soo good.

Main course

Panang Chicken Curry

To start with for this one, I had to remove the chicken from the container and place in the oven. Once that was nearly ready, to start preparing the sauce and vegetables….and sides (next Instagram post for the sides)

The smell from the chicken cooking and then the sauce was really good, my mouth was watering and I was wishing the timer would hurry up and finish.

The pressure was on, as I wanted to plate this up and make it look as good as I could as it was really quality food, mega tasty and I wanted to make sure I did it justice.

Plated up, photos taken….time to dig in.⠀

The sauce with the vegetables, chicken or combination of both wow!!! I was very impressed with this, and finished everything again just like the starter I could have easily had seconds!!!

The Sides

Steamed Jasmine Rice

This was super easy to cook, a quick 2 to 3 minutes in the microwave and done.

I tried this on its own to start with and it was very soft and had a great flavour, and mixed with the main course sauce or chicken etc all the flavours worked extremely well.

Crispy Pork Pad Thai

The guide book said “it’s intended to be enjoyed cold” so U plated it up as nice as I could and put it aside till everything else was ready.

This was very nice, for me it needed the pork to add a little more flavour…but that’s a personal preference. Mixed with everything else, again very nice.

Desert :

Coconut & Cardamon Rice Pudding
with optional Salted bean curd caramel and exotic fruit compote⠀

I was starting to feel very full, but I had one more dish to prepare and taste.

This sounded very nice, with and without the optional ingredients. For me, I knew once the rice pudding was about ready I would add the caramel into the rice and mix, as I have a sweet tooth and this would make it extra nice for my personal taste.

WOW! perfection! bursting with flavour and very nice! I then added a little of the fruit compote and took a bite…again this worked very well with the way I had prepared this.

I finished it all.⠀

The wine and cheese

The Cheese: Landana 500 : pineapple & nigella chutney with water crackers⠀

The Wine: Le Sentier Blanc 2018 (Gascony, France)⠀

Now, who doesn’t love some cheese and wine? we all do….I actually didn’t have this when my Home By Nice arrived I saved it for the next night as I was so full from my amazing 3-course meal.⠀

This was a nice little extra and added to the meal, the wine was very nice….very light and worked really well with the cheese and crackers.

Keep watching my posts for my pics for every part of my Home by Nice experience.⠀
