Hooligan Wine Bar (Glasgow) 2021 : Review

About

Hooligan opened on Friday September 3rd, and for their menu dishes they use the best seasonal Scottish produce.

Located above The Drake on Lyndoch Street in the city’s Park Circus area, so when you go inside the Drake head on up the stairs and there you will find Hoolgan.

In addition to amazing dishes they also stock a wide selection of wines.

Inside :

Sitting inside its got a very warm and cosy vibe, you instantly feel relaxed and ready to sip a nice wine and have a lovely meal.

The Food

Tonight’s menu looked very nice, and I couldn’t wait to see and taste each dish. Unfortunately due to my nut allergy I couldn’t take the dessert but they made a lovely alternate for me.

Part of the starter was the smoked almonds, which my friend enjoyed very much.

Sourdough & focaccia, roast garlic & thyme butter, evoo

Tonight there was going to be many lovely small plates, so I was really looking forward to the food.

This was the first to arrive at the table, and I was very happy as Focaccia is a big fav of mine.

The focaccia on its own was very nice, and had that lovely flavour. The butter was really good, and just added that extra level of flavour to the focaccia.

This was a lovely first plate and one that I could have easily had more of.

My Rating :

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Selection of charcuterie, pickled walnuts, guindilla pepper, with a selection of IJ Mellis cheeses, burnt onion chutney, crackers

I do love a nice cheese board every now and then and this when it arrived looked really nice, plus it had some meats to try to.

Every item on this board was packed with flavour, and all worked on their own or together.

The cheeses were so nice, and lovely on the crackers.

This is another dish I could easily see myself having again with a lovely glass of wine.

Kombu cured monkfish, grapes, mint, dashi

I have never tried monkfish, so I didn’t know what to expect from this dish.

When it arrived this looked very interesting, and it was time to taste it.

WOW! this was a lovely taste not mega fishy, as the Kombu really was the main flavour coming over.

These were so so easy to eat, and just like the previous dishes I could easily have had lots more of this.

Sweetcorn fritter, cumin, garlic, red pepper

When I saw “Sweetcorn fritters” I thought hmm ok so these will just be so so…I couldn’t have been more wrong!

These are addictive!

If nothing else on the menu catches your eye, you have to visit for this!! going by what I heard on the night I visited these were a general fav with everyone else that turned up.

My Rating :

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Aubergine, fermented tomato, feta, sumac yoghurt, crispy flatbread

Aubergine is not something I tend to like, its something I have to be in the mood for but I am always up for trying new dishes.

This was another dish I was very surprised at, the flavours all worked very well together and the taste was really nice.

I know I sound like I am repeating myself but this is something I would have again….the flavours of dishes from Hooligans is really top class!!

My Rating :

Rating: 5 out of 5.

King Oyster mushroom, salted baked celeriac, mushroom jus

I have a love hate relationship with mushrooms, sometimes they taste just ok sometimes not great so when this arrived I was 50/50 about trying it.

I did try it and I am glad I did, the Oyster mushroom tasted soo nice like a BBQ flavour for me.

I never thought I would say this about mushrooms but this was the nicest I have ever tasted.

My Rating :

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Bavette, hash brown, beanaise, charred shallot

I am not a big steak person, but I was willing to try this one. Lucky my friend loved steak so he was happy to finish it for the both of us.

The steak was nice, but as I said am not a fan. The hash brown was AMAZING!!! this is the best hash brown I have ever tasted and could have had loads more of them.

My Rating :

Rating: 5 out of 5.

and to drink – You and I Kombucha (Lime Sea Salt)

I was the designated driver tonight, so I asked for whatever soft drink they had which was this.

I have never heard of this or knew what it tasted like but said ok.

This was very refreshing and very pleasant, I even had two of these as I enjoyed them that much.

My Rating :

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Gloriosa (Glasgow, West End) 2021 : Review

The Visit

When I stayed in the West End I knew this place under a different name, and then it changed and I added here to my list to visit. During my time at the West End and due to lockdown etc I didn’t get to visit.

Tonight I arranged to meet a good friend, and go for dinner here.

Inside looks much brighter and more minimalistic and nicer than the previous look.

The Food

I had no idea what to order so I went with my gut feeling and just picked two dishes.

Starter : Burrata, Swish Chard, Lemon & Olive Oil £10

On arrival this was very Instagramable, just look how nice this looks.

Now it was time to taste and see if it tasted as good as it looked.

I tried the swish chard on its own and it was perfect, the flavour with the pepper was amazing.

I then tried it with everything else, and the lemon and olive oil combined with it WOW this was really very very good and one I would have again on my next visit.

My Rating :

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Main : Casarecce, rocket & pine nut pesto £12

This was another random selection, more so due to the pesto as I love pesto.

On arrival this smelled really good, and visually looked good to.

The pasta was cooked perfectly, and the pesto was very nice and it worked very well together.

My Rating :

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Overall :

I had a really good night tonight, the food was good and so was the company.

I am glad I finally got to check this place out, as it was a great night and they do really tasty food.

If your in the West End check them out.

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Mezze (Glasgow) : Review

Mezze

V: 15th October 2019

I decided to go back to Mezze again as I was seeing a show at the SECC Hydro, and my last 3 visits to Mezze were amazing so I couldn’t wait.

I went online and placed a reservation, and after work drove here.

On arrival I was around 30 mins early, but decided to go in and see if it was OK or if I had to wait that would have been OK. I was lucky that there were a few seats available, and were seated at the tables near the booths.

I was really looking forward to this….then I saw the menu that was put out…..Street-food menu huh? where was the vast menu I had in the past? Little disappointed I thought, OK will just order a few dishes…

I kinda knew what I wanted but these options were just so so, but I thought OK lets ask what the dessert is tonight so I know how much to order or to be good and leave room. I was told tonight they only were doing one dessert, and unfortunately it contained nuts which I couldn’t take so that made my mind up.

I also asked if the Gyros came with the chips, and was told no! huh? I have had several here in the UK, Greece and Romania and chips are kinda part of it but I thought OK lets order a side of chips.

This was turning in to a hmm night….lets see how the food was.

The Food…

Pork Gyros £7.50

served with open pita, salad, tzatziki

Oh! I know its street food, but this was small and more salad than pork and definitely didn’t resemble my previous Gyros e.g here is one I had in Greece.

The Gyros I had in Greece

Nothing similar apart from the pita really. I did eat my side order of chips, which were nice, sorry no pic as I was too bummed with my Gyro.

Don’t get me wrong it was nice, but size, cost and since it didn’t fully resemble a Gyros I have had in the past it was kinda just a hmm

Overall I was so excited to go back, what has happened to an amazing restaurant with amazing food? has it been taken over?

The Gyros was far too costly for what you got, and where were the chips in it?

My girlfriend and I both were so disappointed and both said where was the Mezze that we once knew and we both said we probably wont be returning.

This is the first restaurant in a while I will be removing from my top spot, sorry guys but what happened?

Final point, just because I had a bad experience tonight and because I was comparing it to my last visits don’t let this put you off. I was speaking to another couple, and it was their first time and they enjoyed it.
