Clachaig Inn (Glencoe) 2024 : Review

Visit & Vibes

On my journey home, a friend recommended that I make a stop here—a place I had never heard of before.

Upon arrival, I couldn’t help but wonder about that little road to the right as you head north. Now, I finally know what lies there. However, since I was descending from the Isle of Skye, that little road was actually on my left.

As I approached, I discovered the Clachaig Inn, prompting me to step inside for a spot of lunch.

I refrained from taking any pictures inside since it was quite busy today, and I’m aware that some people prefer not to be included in others’ photographs.

However, the interior exuded a slightly modern yet cosy pub atmosphere, with stunning views visible from both outside and through the windows.

The Food

Haggis Starter £6.95
MacSween’s of Edinburgh haggis with creamy Ben Nevis whisky sauce served with oatcakes.

At this point in my journey, I wasn’t too hungry, so I decided to opt for a haggis starter, featuring haggis from Edinburgh, accompanied by a creamy Ben Nevis whiskey sauce and served with oat cakes.

Upon arrival, the presentation was impressive, and the aroma was delightful, making me eager to dig in. The portion size, especially for a starter, was generous.

I sampled some of the sauce on its own, and it was incredibly tasty. The haggis, too, had a wonderful flavour when tasted on its own. When combined with the oatcake, it created a perfect, flavorful bite.

The only downside was that there were only three oat cakes provided, while there were plenty of haggis. I would have preferred a few more oat cakes to help finish off the dish without resorting to using a fork. Nevertheless, from start to finish, it was a delicious experience, and I would gladly order it again if I were to return here.

Boozy Hot Chocolate: Bounty £8.45
White Hot Chocolate, Coconut Rum and Coconut Syrup

I was in the mood for a hot chocolate with my lunch when I spotted something intriguing—a boozy hot chocolate with a Bounty flavour. Feeling indulgent, I decided to treat myself and give it a try.

Upon arrival, the presentation was charming. With the first sip, I was impressed. This hot chocolate was delightful, reminiscent of a liquidized, slightly warm Bounty chocolate bar. From the initial taste to the last, it was pure bliss.

I could easily have enjoyed another or even two more, but I exercised restraint today. This is definitely something I look forward to enjoying again when I return.

Final Thoughts…

Overall, my lunch stop here was excellent.

Although they offered a diverse menu, I wasn’t particularly hungry, having enjoyed a substantial breakfast at the hotel before departing.

This place is truly a hidden gem with breathtaking views. If I find myself in the area again, I would definitely revisit and perhaps sample something different from their menu.

Glasgow Rum Soirée March Event- 2024 : Review

EVENT
27-03-2024

The Event

It’s that time of the month again when the Rum Club gathers.

If you’re a rum enthusiast and haven’t attended yet, you should definitely check it out. It’s an enjoyable evening where you get to sample a different brand and style of rum each month.

Upon arrival, you’re greeted with a welcome cocktail and plenty of laughter. It’s truly a fantastic experience.

So, be sure to join us, and perhaps I’ll see you at the next event.

For this month’s gathering, we were treated to a welcome cocktail featuring Mount Gay rum and Velvet felurum cornoil.

The latter, although a mouthful to pronounce, was a delightful surprise for me, as I hadn’t encountered it before. Exploring new aspects of rum is always a pleasure, and this was an excellent introduction. Some likened the cocktail to an old-fashioned, but in my opinion, it surpassed that classic. I found it smoother and more enjoyable, making it a cocktail I’d readily recreate at home.

Overall, it was a delightful experience. Now, onto the main event: the rum club officially commenced.

Tonight, we were treated to three rums by Appleton Estate: the Number 8 Reserve, Rumburra, and Copalli White Rum. This is a brand I’ve never tried before, so I was very interested to see how each of these would taste.

The rum selection tonight was truly delightful, particularly the Rumburra and the Appleton Estate, which paired exceptionally well with 70% dark chocolate.

The chocolate not only enhanced the smoothness of the rum but also introduced a slightly different flavour profile compared to enjoying the Appleton Estate on its own. Without the chocolate, the rum was still enjoyable, but it had a slight burn to it.

This discovery was intriguing; I had never considered enjoying rum with chocolate in this manner before. While there are chocolates infused with rum available, the experience of savouring a glass of rum at home while nibbling on dark chocolate was entirely new to me. It proved to be a fascinating and enjoyable experience, one that I look forward to repeating in the future.

In addition to the previous rums, we were also treated to Island Slice Rum.

Sylvester joined us tonight with some of his own rum, produced in Scotland.

He brought along a Spiced Rum, a Single Dark Rum, and a Scotch Bonnet Rum.

Of the three, I particularly enjoyed the Single Dark Rum. It boasted a smooth texture, full-bodied flavour, and delightful caramel notes. I also had the opportunity to taste the Scotch Bonnet and the Spiced Rum.

Given my love for sweeter flavours, I initially thought the Spiced Rum would be my favourite. However, it was a tough decision. The Scotch Bonnet Rum blew me away with its exceptional taste and just managed to edge out the Spiced Rum for me.

Both the Single Dark Rum and the Scotch Bonnet Rum are definite purchases for me once I’ve finished setting up my house. They are truly exceptional rums, and I highly recommend trying them out. I’ll include the links to their products in the paragraph below.

Overall, another fantastic Rum Club event.

I’m leaving out some details from this recap, as experiencing one of these gatherings firsthand is truly worth it.

The tickets are quite affordable, and the event typically lasts between two to three hours, depending on the level of banter and tasting enthusiasm. Things tend to get livelier after a few tastings, once everyone’s spirits are lifted a bit.

For me, this event was particularly enjoyable, and I gleaned a few insights along the way. I especially enjoyed the Rumburra and the Mount Gay Black Barrel rum.

However, the two standout rums for me tonight were from Island Slice Rum. In total, I left tonight’s event enamoured with four new rums, all of which I’ve added to my Amazon wishlist as a reminder to purchase them in the future.

So, as I mentioned earlier, do consider attending if you’ve never tried rum before. It’s a great opportunity to sample a variety of flavours. If it’s not to your liking, there’s no obligation to attend future events.

Ultimately, it’s all about having a good time, and that’s precisely what these events offer.

Glasgow Rum Experience with Angostura Rum- 2024 : Review

EVENT
29-02-2024

The Event

Another month, another Rum Club, and I couldn’t wait to go back.

If you’ve never been to one of these, you should definitely check it out. Even if you don’t think you’re a fan of rum, it’s worth attending at least once. It doesn’t cost much, and you get to try a variety of brands and their rum. You never know, you might find yourself either absolutely hating the rum, but at least you can say you’ve tried it, or absolutely loving it and coming back for more, adding some rum to your drinks cabinet.

As for me, I’ve always loved rum, so I was eagerly anticipating tonight’s Rum Club.

A wee welcome cocktail to kick off the night.

Tonight’s rum was Angostura. I can’t recall if I’ve tried it in the past, given that I’ve sampled many different brands. However, part of me anticipated this to be a completely new experience, so I was eager to taste some of their rums.

We began by sampling the Angostura Seven Year Rum, which, for me, exhibited smoky, caramel-like notes. It didn’t have much of a burn to it, and I found it quite flavorful. This marked a promising start, and Angostura was now a brand on my radar.

The next rum was the Angostura 1919. After enjoying the first one, I wondered if this one could surpass it. For me, it had hints of leather and vanilla flavours, with a lighter and sharper profile. I found this one to be even more preferable than the first. I could have easily indulged in more of this. Thus, this one was leading the pack for me at this point.

After the fantastic 1919, could the next one be even better? This one was labeled as a 1787. It had a completely different flavor profile and was much smoother compared to the first two.

I couldn’t quite decide where to rank this one, but for me, the 1919 still stood out as the clear winner. However, I did enjoy this one as well, but so far, 1919 was still reigning supreme.

The final rum tonight was a Spiced Rum, which really caught my interest when I heard about it, as I’m a big fan of Spiced Rums due to my sweet tooth. There’s always room and time for a delightful Spiced Rum.

This one was a new addition to their lineup, called Tambu. The branding of this was exceptionally cool, with a carnival vibe to it. As you can see, it boasts a fun and funky label.

This one had delightful notes to it, and the taste, for me, was a blend of caramel and gingerbread. And, oh my god, this was the winner for me. I could have easily savoured this all night long, all week long.

Overall

Overall, it was another fantastic Rum Club experience. There were plenty of laughs, a wealth of information, and amazing tastings.

Tonight’s brand ambassador for Angostura was a delightful young woman named Anna, and it was a pleasure to meet her. If she’s reading this, I want to extend my gratitude for attending tonight and introducing me to what could potentially become one of my new favorite rums, the Spiced Rum featured tonight.

As I mentioned, if you’ve never attended one and you’re even slightly intrigued, I encourage you to click the link and check out the next event. Who knows, maybe I’ll see you there.
