Bar Roma (Tollcross Road, Glasgow) 2023 : Review

Visit & Vibes

As I go about my daily work, my view encompasses a building situated just across the road, a structure that has undergone numerous transformations over the years.

However, the most recent transition caught my attention when it transformed from a charming Romanian restaurant into a trendy establishment known as Bar Roma, specializing in both functions and exquisite dining experiences.

I vividly recall the days when it was a Romanian restaurant, and I cherished the moments spent there and loved the food.

Regrettably, as fate would have it, ownership shifted hands, prompting me to explore the reincarnation that is Bar Roma.

Today, I made a deliberate choice to savor the offerings of Bar Roma through a takeaway experience, driven by my curiosity about their culinary delights and the transformations within their interior. Stepping inside, I couldn’t help but notice that the essence of the place remains largely unaltered, preserving the charm I remember, albeit with a noteworthy addition—a central bar that now graces the premises. This enhancement adds a fresh dynamic to the ambiance, breathing new life into an already inviting setting.

The Food

BBQ BADBOY £11.95
Crispy chicken or handmade beef smothered in our very own BBQ. sauce served with lettuce, onion & tomato

Opting for a takeaway meal, I perused the menu at Bar Roma, seeking a dish that truly enticed my palate. While a few options intrigued me, one particular item stood out prominently—their chicken burger. Admittedly, the price appeared on the higher end, likely catering to those seeking a dine-in experience with table service and all the trimmings. However, for the sake of trying their fare in a takeaway format, I decided to indulge my curiosity.

Upon unwrapping the tinfoil, a delightful aroma greeted my senses. Visually, it presented itself adequately, and I eagerly took a substantial bite. The chicken proved to be a highlight—crispy perfection enveloped in a generous coat of luscious barbecue sauce, infusing each mouthful with delectable flavor. In terms of taste, it held up admirably.

Turning my attention to the accompanying chips, I was pleasantly surprised to discover a bonus in the form of onion rings within the box. The chips themselves were impeccably cooked, boasting a golden crispness and a well-balanced seasoning that negated any need for additional salt or flavor enhancements.

In retrospect, evaluating this takeaway experience, I would concede that it leaned toward the pricier side, warranting only an “okay” rating. However, in the context of a dine-in visit, the pricing seemed more reasonable. Ultimately, the chicken burger and chips held their own, delivering a satisfying flavor profile that made the experience worthwhile.

Final Thoughts…

My visit to Bar Roma offered a pleasant opportunity to explore its interior and engage with some of the friendly staff while awaiting my takeaway lunch. What stood out was the evident thriving atmosphere that Bar Roma currently enjoys, a testament affirmed by their active Facebook presence, with a steady stream of patrons flowing in and out daily, throughout the week.

As I delved into my takeaway lunch, my impressions began to take shape. The meal, though enjoyable, did not rank among the finest burgers I’ve tasted. Price-wise, it skewed a tad towards the expensive side for a takeaway option, leaving me pondering the prospect of a dedicated takeaway menu to cater to more budget-conscious diners. On the flip side, for those opting for a sit-in experience, the value for money seemed more reasonable.

Regarding flavor, the meal exhibited a commendable profile—nothing extraordinary but certainly pleasing to the palate. In summary, my overall assessment would be positive yet restrained, categorizing the meal as a decent choice.

Damasqino Restaurant & Cafe (Takeaway, Glasgow) 2023 : Review

The Delivery

While the daily grind at work usually involves ordering from our trusty local spots, my colleague and I decided to spice things up one Tuesday afternoon. Instead of sticking to the familiar, we ventured further afield for some exciting lunch options.

My previous experience with this takeaway had been rather mediocre, so I was hoping that trying something different would do the trick.

As soon as our order arrived at our shop, the tantalizing aroma wafted through the air, immediately whetting our appetites.

The Food Order

Special Sandwich Chicken £9.99 (BOGOF)
Roasted thin slices of marinated chicken, sesame sauce, garlic sauce, and pickles with toasted Lebanese bread. Served with chips.

First things first, the portion size was nothing short of astonishing. We’d scored a “buy one, get one free” deal, which meant we were in for a feast that didn’t break the bank. At just £10 for both dishes, plus delivery, it was already off to an impressive start.

Now, let’s talk about the star of the show – the chicken wrap. It was a symphony of flavors in every bite. The generous filling was bursting with a medley of tastes that delighted my palate. The pickles added a tangy zing, the onions provided a hint of crunch, and the chicken itself was incredibly tender and well-seasoned. It was a delightful fusion of textures and tastes that made each mouthful a pure joy.

What truly stood out was the authenticity of the Lebanese and Syrian cuisine. This was my first foray into these culinary traditions, and I was pleasantly surprised by the use of pickled items in the dish. While I initially had reservations, the pickles worked harmoniously with the other flavors, creating a well-rounded and satisfying meal.

One of the things I appreciated the most was how filling the meal was. Unlike some takeout experiences that leave you hungry shortly after, this left me content and fueled for the rest of the workday.

Final Thoughts…

In hindsight, I’m glad I decided to give this takeaway joint another chance. The chicken wrap I had this time around was a game-changer, miles apart from the lackluster chicken shawarma I’d sampled previously. If you find yourself craving a flavorful and filling lunch option or happen to be in the area, I wholeheartedly recommend giving this dish a try.

To sum it up, this Lebanese and Syrian takeaway experience was a revelation. It’s proof that venturing outside your comfort zone can lead to extraordinary culinary discoveries. I’m looking forward to exploring more of their menu in the future, and I can confidently say that this place has secured a spot in my list of go-to takeout joints. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to savor these delightful flavors; you won’t be disappointed.

The Food

Tonight, my taste buds led me to what I had on my last visit the chicken shawarma wrap.

Chicken Shwarma Wrap £4.50

Portion size again was very good and it would definitely fill this hunger spot.

As I unwrapped the shawarma, my anticipation grew. The first bite revealed a slight twist in the taste profile compared to my previous encounter. Tonight’s shawarma had a bolder curry flavor, which was different from the last one I had here.

While I found myself thinking about the more balanced taste of my last visit, this one tonight was just as nice but I did think last visit’s shawarma was just that little nicer.

Despite the slight difference in flavor, this chicken shawarma wrap remained tasty. The tender and well-seasoned chicken, complemented by fresh vegetables and zesty sauce, gave me a nice wee meal after today’s wee drive.
