3 Male Facts of Ageing and What You Can Do About It

Time waits for no man and aging can be just as deprecating to a man’s confidence as it is to a woman’s. TV ads are full of anti-aging products for women such as wrinkle cream, shampoos and makeup, but what about men who don’t or won’t take the metrosexual route?

Common issues for male aging include:

  • Balding
  • Belly fat
  • Bone weakening

You might associate one or all of these with older men, but these can start at a young age perhaps in your twenties and even younger for baldness. Patrick Stewart is famous for his bald head which he got when he was just 17 years old, the body begins to store fat on the gut in your thirties and weaker bone density can begin at around 50.

Don’t Fret About It

While it’s more common in men, the loss of one’s hair is a frightening prospect for women too. However, unlike women, whose hair can be a hugely socially defining aspect of their lives, bald men can be seen as attractive.

There are many women who love a bald guy and celebrities like Jason Statham, Bruce Willis and Vin Diesel wouldn’t look anywhere near as cool if they had hair. However, going bald isn’t for everyone and some men identify themselves by their hairstyle as a personal identifier and source of confidence.

While going bald as we get older is just a simple fact of life for some, there are treatments available that can help slow the process or even help to recover some foliage.

Medication

Male pattern baldness tablets (more info here) can prevent testosterone from being converted to DHT which is a cause of thinning hair.

Treatment

Minoxidil is a very well known treatment for baldness and works by channeling more oxygen and nutrients to the follicles.

Embrace

Shaving your head is a very fashionable thing to do when balding occurs. As mentioned earlier, think of guys like Vin Diesel and the sex appeal that they have. The bald shave is an attractive look and goes with any kind of style you can think of.

The Results will Speak for Themselves

The scourge of a flabby gut isn’t necessarily only for people who don’t eat right. Belly fat is an annoying fact of getting older. Whereas fat is stored on the thighs and buttocks of aging women, it is stored on the belly of aging men.

Since our metabolic rate decreases as we get older, visceral fat, as it is known, begins to build up around the abdominal organs instead of under the skin. The exact reasons for this are unknown, but what is known is that this type of fat as we get older contributes to issues of the liver.

Anyone who has tried will tell you that getting rid of a pot belly is not easy. It requires specific and intense exercises, a particular and maintained diet and a lot of time.

Crunches

Also known as sit-ups, these are one of the hardest techniques in physical exercise and if you haven’t worked out a lot in your lifetime, you will suffer when beginning these.

The best crunch technique is to lay down on an exercise mat with your knees bent and your feet on the ground forming a triangle shape. Place your hands behind your head or on your chest and then lift your body towards your knees and then back down again. Repeat this 20 times, then rest and repeat again.

Cycling

A more fun exercise activity, cycling is great for your entire body, but it’s excellent for losing excess weight as it can burn a lot of calories in a short space of time, plus it’s excellent for your heart.

Walking

Not everyone is able to perform strenuous exercise because of various health issues or body limitations, but walking can be done by most without fear of overdoing it. Going for a walk for 30 minutes per day goes a long way in helping you lose weight. Of course, this doesn’t mean moseying along, put a little effort into it so that your heart rate rises a little and before you know it you will be walking and then jogging for miles.

Graceful Vitality

One of the most associated issues with aging is becoming frail and fragile which is the stereotype of the old man, just like Mr. Burns from The Simpsons. But bone-weakening begins around 50, which isn’t an old age at all when you think about it.

This happens because the bones begin to shrink in size and density as we get older which can make us shorter with weaker muscles. There are a lot of things you can do to combat this.

Calcium

This might sound obvious but increasing calcium intake is one of the most effective ways to combat bone weakening. Bones are made almost entirely of calcium and connective tissue and calcium naturally deplete. You can offset the issue with more calcium intake from supplements and calcium-rich foods.

Physical Activity

Bone density loss can be slowed down by playing sports or taking part in weight activities by encouraging calcium build from the bones actually adapting to forces placed on them. Football, tennis and incline jogging are great activities for encouraging bone growth.

Vitamin D

Healthy bones require certain vitamins and minerals, and D is one of them. While you might get enough vitamin D from sunlight, you can supplement this with vitamin D-rich foods such as salmon, tuna and eggs.

Korean Street Toast (Gilgeori) – Recipe

…also known as gilgeori toast.

I watched many Korean films years ago and I heard this name mentioned a few time, so I decided to check it out and make it and yeah it was really nice.

I decided to make this again and it was just as nice and filling as I remembered.

Yields : 1

Ingredients

  • ⅓ cup shredded carrot
  • 1 cup thinly shredded green cabbage
  • 1 spring onion (thinly sliced)
  • ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 pinch cayenne pepper
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 2 thick slices white bread
  • 2/3 teaspoon white sugar
  • 2 thin slices smoked ham
  • 1 slice mild Cheddar cheese
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon mayonnaise

Content Prep

  • Combine carrot, cabbage, spring onion, black pepper, cayenne, and salt.
  • Mix with your hands for about 20-30 seconds until soft and seasoned.
  • Add eggs and mix thoroughly with a fork
  • Set aside.

Bread Prep

  • Heat 2 tablespoons butter in a non-stick skillet over medium-high heat.
  • Add bread slices and toss to make sure both sides are well buttered.
  • Grill bread until both sides are beautifully toasted and golden brown and starting to get a little crispy.
  • Remove to a plate.

Step 3

  • Heat remaining butter in the same skillet over medium heat.
  • Add cabbage mixture; cook and simultaneously mix by using the edge of a spatula to chop down on the surface while pushing the edges up and over the top.
  • As the mixture starts to hold its shape, form into a rectangle that’s same length as two slices of bread
  • Split the rectangle in half and continue to cook until golden brown; flip and continue on the opposite side, 3 to 4 minutes total.
  • Stack cabbage pieces on top of one another and transfer to toast.
  • Top with sugar.

Step 4

  • Add the two slices of ham to the same skillet over medium heat; cook until sizzling.
  • Flip and top ham with Cheddar cheese.
  • Cook until melted, about 1 minute.

Step 5

  • Place ham on sandwich and squeeze over mayonnaise and ketchup.
  • Top with remaining slice of toast, slice in half.

Enjoy 즐겨

The Drink

This is a Gin liqueur which means its going to be sweeter than just normal Gin, which is perfect for me as I have a sweet tooth and am sure this will hit the spot.

Tasting time…

This is soo good! and lovely flavours and scents.

Yes it does come over as a more festive gin, but you could easily have this any point throughout the year. Its great flavours, makes it such a nice and lovely drink to sit down and relax with.

Firstly a big thanks to Wharf Distillery for sending me their amazing gin.

As I said in my review above, you can easily drink this gin all year round. I highly recommended it, as its just a lovely flavour and very smooth and easy to drink.
