Labyrinth the Board Game : Review

Website : http://riverhorse.eu/labyrinth/

Game Day : 20th January 2017

Will Sarah manage to defeat Jareth and his Labyrinth, or will the Goblin King turn little Toby into a goblin babe? You have thirteen hours to find out! Play with up to four friends in this fun family board game based on the classic Labyrinth movie by Jim Henson.

I purchased this game in early 2016 and due to demand, I received this late 2016 round about December.

I decided to wait and open this when I got my friend’s round, which was recently for an unboxing and gameplay.

I have been a big fan of the movie since I was a child, and still love it to this day. My favorite scene in the film is the one I am linking to below, and its my favorite song.

As The World Falls Down: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IR4uZjP0tbI

Also, Jennifer was my biggest crush when I was younger, and I will always have a little crush on her.

As you probably can guess I had a big smile on my face when unboxing this, and making me feel like a big kid again.

Now before you start any tabletop game you always have to prepare well, tonight we had beers, snacks, and crisps.

Now for the fun.

Unboxing :

I have never done an unboxing review so forgive me if I don’t follow the normal flow etc 🙂 I also won’t go into the full gameplay, just a highlight review so it’s not too long to read.

I had Ludo to help me unbox.

Well another big smile seeing all the artwork on the outside of the box, and then the figures just visible at the lower front.

After taking the lid off I saw the contents, and as you can see from the photo the black inner part is velvet. This was a very nice touch and showed that the creators wanted to make this extra special.

The detail of the miniatures is very good, they were cast from detailed molds (Updated: corrected from saying 3D printed). You have several different die, player cards, challenge cards, and coins, and the one you don’t want to get is a Smell Bad coin.

What I liked was none of the characters were in any form of action or run pose, as games don’t have a consistent action theme some parts are relaxed and just standing.

And under the top part :

IMG_4785.jpg

You have the manual and more game parts, that you need to pop out of the cardboard and some you piece together.

Once we all had a good look at the parts we set the game up so we could start.

The Game :

The point of the game is just like the film, you and your team have to take Sarah to the Castle beyond the Goblin City to get her baby brother back before the 13th hour or he will become a Goblin Babe.

Just like any tabletop game you need to read the instructions first, set it up and then play. This part always takes the longest, but its important to do this.

My character was Ludo so I was very happy, he has always been a favorite for me.

IMG_4793.jpg

The photo above shows my character sheet, you can see how much Willpower your character has to start with and also your speed, Wit, and Brawn. These figures are different for all the characters in the game.

We started the game and we took our time to make sure we were following the rules, once we got into the swing of things that’s when we put the book down and just played.

As I said above there are coins you don’t want to get “Smell Bad” and guess who got one….yip me!

img_4795

Once every player has had a turn you push the clock to the next hour, this means you have to make sure you do everything you need to do, and plan each move very smartly as once that hits the 13th hour the game ends and Toby is a Goblin Babe.

IMG_4796.jpg

One of the cards made us all laugh out loud, one player has to say the famous lines from “Magic Dance” this was a very nice touch.

img_4797

I won’t go into the full gameplay as that would bore you and also mean loads of reading, but the game was very fun for us and we had a good laugh working together. If you are a fan of the film then you will love this, its easy to play for anyone and enjoyable for all ages.

Unfortunately, our first game we lost, but this was a very fun game to play and I am glad I was one of the first to preorder it.

If you want to make the game that little bit better, put on the soundtrack as you play 🙂

Chaakoo Bombay Cafe Bloggers Meet Up #1 (Glasgow) : Review

invite

When I started this blog I set it up as a challenge, I wanted to try and improve my spelling and my social life and see what it’s like to become a blogger. I ate out a lot so I decided to become a food blogger, as I was always getting teased for constantly taking photos of my food.

October 2016 was when I really focused on my blog, as prior to that it was just a little “if I remember to do it” project. At that point, I only had 30-odd Twitter followers and just friends on my Instagram. Now January 2017, those numbers have changed a lot.

Over the past few months, I have been to a large number of restaurants and been invited to a few events. I have also made many new friends along the way, all of them really lovely, and would like to keep in touch and see them more often.

Now 2017 my goals for my blog are :

  • Be more critical in all reviews
  • Try more random products to add to the mix of my food reviews
  • Arrange some Glasgow Blogger meet-ups.
  • Vlogging

The first two points above are easy to achieve, but the last two are not so much.

I have seen and heard from people (mostly heard) that Glasgow  Blogger meet-ups have been arranged in the past, but normally a large amount say yes and then only a few turn up or its called off. They also tend to be mostly food specific…why? so that’s something I wanted to change.

I used to prepare a lot of events and DJ inside the online game Secondlife for a charity, so I thought let’s use that knowledge and bring it to this.

My first task was to figure out the location and who to invite, I thought starting small was the best idea.

I won’t go into full detail, but I meet a few people at the Revolution de Cuba bloggers event and have kept in touch. I have also kept in touch with Emma Eats and Weekends with Wendy since my last meet-ups with them. I thought this would be the perfect start and messaged them.

Next was to think of a location, but this was an easy one….Chaakoo Bombay Cafe.

Our Meet Up : Friday 27th January 2017

Location : Chaakoo

As you may have seen from my Tweets or blogs, I have been to Chaakoo a lot. The food is amazing and the staff are very friendly. For my first meet up this was where I wanted it to be.

Invited : 14

Just like all events planned you never really expect to have a full house, people’s plans change, they don’t feel well, etc. Tonight we had a total of 7, for me this was a success as I was only expecting 4 or fewer mostly due to it being the first and due to the small amount invited.

The Guests :

I have to say at this point if you reading this and know me, and wondering why you never got an invite don’t worry I am not ignoring you there was a reason. The people I invited tonight all have similar personalities or I thought would mix well with everyone.

This was a key factor in arranging tonight, I didn’t want to just invite x y, and z and hope they mixed so I planned it so that there would be some form of connection etc.

The people that turned up tonight were :

  • Chris : This is my best friend and he has been very supportive with my blogging.

Weekends With Wendy : A travel blogger and friend that I have met a few times since I started blogging.

Instagram : www.instagram.com/wendyandrew_/

Amy’s Food Blog : I have now met Amy twice, she is a lovely girl and very friendly. Amy is a food blogger and journalist.

Tom Jarvis : Amy’s boyfriend, and audio blogger.

Evy, evidently : Evy is a blogger and Vlogger. I have only been in contact with Evy very recently, and again she is a very nice girl to chat with, and look forward to meeting and chatting to her more.

And me 🙂

As you can see if you take a look at everyone’s blog, I didn’t just focus on food bloggers. There are a lot of really nice bloggers in Glasgow, and they don’t just focus on food so now it’s time we have a meet-up and meet everyone.

Also, my plan is to hold it at a different restaurant every time, as it’s always good to try somewhere new.

We were welcomed by the staff at Chaakoo and given a nice welcome cocktail, and a lovely set table for everyone tonight.

We all ordered what we wanted and just chatted, and took photos of the food and each other.

I won’t do a food review here as I had some of the same dishes that I have already posted about, so check my reviews out when you get a chance.

I had a fun time, and it was good to see everyone getting along.

I would like to give a BIG thanks to everyone who attended tonight, and also a BIGGER thanks to Chaakoo who gave us great service and a few freebies tonight as you helped make tonight very special for everyone and me.

If you haven’t tried Chaakoo yet take a look at their website and visit: chaakoo.co.uk

Now I plan on doing another meet-up last week in February, or the first week of March I will speak to everyone and see what is best. I discussed my idea at tonight’s meet-up, and it seemed to go down well so now I’ve just to contact the manager and arrange dates and numbers.

If you’re a Glasgow blogger and would like an invite, DM me on Twitter and let’s chat 🙂

Next meeting up there will be 20 spaces.

It’s time we bloggers meet up more!

🙂

beGin (Glasgow) : Review

Visit Date : 22nd January 2017

I have been doing the Rum scene ,and one area that is going to be very big this year is the Gin scene.  I have probably only taken Gin in a cocktail, but don’t know much about it or have tried Gin on its on.

This year I would like to learn more about Gin, brands, flavours etc

I was recently contacted by someone at beGin as they knew I would like to learn more, but I was at Byres Road and saw beGin and decided to go in for some food and drinks.

Visit Date : 22nd January 2017

This place has a very cool and relaxed look, and a modern fresh design inside and outside. There wasn’t many people in tonight, which I liked as I could get a good look about and see the place.

Food :

I didn’t want to have big dishes tonight, as I wasn’t very hungry so small snacks was what I had in mind.

Cheesy Haggis Nachos £4.00
Sour Cream

I love Nacho’s and I like Haggis so when I saw this I had to give it a shot.

9df5f8c3-bfd9-40b7-ae95-1dc4fd439afb

This was a large portion for £4.00, so it was very good value for money. I expected maybe half this size, due to its cost.

For me there was maybe not enough cheese and haggis, but I knew I was also having another dish so it was ok. Then again it was £4.00 so can I really fault this? probably not.

Overall I enjoyed this and it’s the perfect size for a snack with a drink, and to share.

Trio of Vegetarian Samosa £6.00
Onion Bhaji / Pakora / Minted Yoghurt (V)

Again just like the first dish, it was a perfect snack size and this was good for just one person. You could potentially share, but it depends on how hungry you are.

5f770813-b932-405c-b78a-05eadb0efa35

Each Samosa was very flavoursome, and the little sauce added to the flavour.

The Gin :

So as I have mentioned above I don’t know anything about Gin, well ok that it can be mixed with cocktails….but that’s about it.

Tonight I wanted to try Gin on its own, and see how one or maybe two taste.

I didn’t know where to start, so I asked one of the staff members her name was Maryam. I told her I have a sweet tooth, and to suggest two.

Maryam suggested :

  • Hoxton : Coconut and grapefruit – ABV 40%
  • Edinburgh Raspberry : Edinburgh Gin enriched with raspberry – ABV 20%

I decided to let Maryam choose one and surprise me.

5d5c8f0c-8083-4e8d-972b-ad9e61d5d408

Maryam returned with the Hoxton and Lemonade, she didn’t pour any lemonade into the glass so I could taste the Hoxton on its own first.

This was nice, a little strange at first and then left me with a coconut aftertaste which was ok. Mixed with the Lemonade it reduced the flavour a little, but not by much which I was surprised at.

I would like to try the raspberry one next time as the Hoxton was nice, but I still needed something a little sweeter. I know I could have it in a cocktail but I would like to see if I could find a nice sweet Gin on its own, well sweet enough for me.

Overall :

Overall my first visit was good and the staff were very friendly, chatty and helpful.

The music that night did have a lot of bad language, for me I didn’t mind but maybe some others it wouldn’t have liked this…..this would be my only issue from tonight.

I would like to thank Maryam for her help tonight, and I will be going to here to try a few more Gins as there were lots on the menu.

Any visits I will keep you posted on how my Gin experience is going.

Cheers
