Paradise Persian Restaurant (West End, Glasgow) : Review

Persian Paradise offers a feast reminiscent of a ‘Darvish’ fairy tale.
Genuine antiques, old Persian copper lamps, contains and warm wood columns create reflection of Iran’s romanticism when it was know as Persia.
Persian Paradise restaurant, in keeping with tradition, is hand-painted in rich red-maroon turquoise blue and sun gold. Greeted by an impressive waiting room, guests enter the main dining area of the restaurant, filled with the Iranian antiques and rugs and carpets.

I have recently started to spend more time in the West End of Glasgow, and this weekend I met my girlfriend and we decided to go for a walk. This was a very nice day, and I got to look about here for potential places to visit and add to my ever growing list.

We came across this restaurant and started to look at the menu.

I have never had any Persian food before, or really heard much about it from my circle of friends.

Main Course :

Kebab Koubideh £9.50
“Two skewers of minced Lamb”

I don’t normally order Lamb, but I wanted to try it here. Normally I would play safe and order chicken but tonight I opted for the Lamb.

This dish comes with either rice or fries, and to play safe I opted for the Fries tonight just in case the Lamb wasn’t that good.

Presentation wise it was just ok, I am sure it could have been put out a little nicer.

Taste wise the Lamb was very good, it was nice and soft and melted in my mouth. It wasn’t the strongest of flavours, it just had enough to be nice. The table did have a few sauces, which did help boost the flavour.

Overall :

I did want to order a chocolate cake after my main meal, but most of the items that day were finished. The remaining items that were still available I couldn’t have, as they contained nuts which I can’t do.

Overall my first experience of a Persian restaurant was good, the food was nice and also the value for money was perfect.

Most of you that have been following this blog know i’ve been to Poco Havana a few times, you can read my previous reviews here and here

I have been hitting the Glasgow restaurants very hard recently, and spent a little more than I wanted. When I recently came across an itison voucher that I purchased a while back, and noticed that it was expiring soon so I thought lets head back and use it for a cheap weekend dinner.

My voucher was for two mains, so I will still show the cost of the dishes so you know what they would have been.

Main Course :

Chipotle Pulled Pork Burrito 12″ £8.95 (normally but I had the voucher)
“FILLED WITH ZINGY CITRUS RICE, REFRIED BEANS, GRATED MONTEREY JACK CHEESE, SALSA, SOUR CREAM AND YOUR CHOICE OF FILLING IN A 10” OR 12” FLOUR TORTILLA”

This was the first time I have had a Burrito at Poco Havana, so I was looking forward to seeing how they did them and also how it tasted.

I know in my recent previous posts I said I would try and be more critical and not always say it was really good, well this was really really good. With every bite I had my mouth was bursting with flavour, and I could have easily had another.

Sorry I didn’t show how it looked inside, I was enjoying it too much it was finished before that thought pop’d in my head.

Cocktail :

Again I have had a few cocktails here in the past, so I decided to try something new.

Frozen Margarita/Daiquiri £13.50
“Sharing jugs of our classic Margaritas and Daiquiris”

My girlfriend and I opted for the Mango one.

As you can see from the photo, you get a large amount since its a sharing jug. You get about 2 glasses full each from this, so its really worth the money.

Overall :

This was a very enjoyable visit, I felt very relaxed and enjoyed the food and cocktails.

Poco Havana have had a few deals on itison, so if you want to check it out but worries about trying somewhere new then this is the option for you.

The staff have always been very friendly and very helpful, and if you like burritos then you should check Poco Havana’s.

Since my last visit I have heard from several people (including some bloggers) that after their first visit to Pizza Punks, the second visit was very poor service etc I decided to check this out for myself.

I didn’t have any problems with my last visit, so I was interested to see if this news was true.

We entered tonight and were greeted and shown to our table, tonight was actually the busiest I’ve seen here (but then again I only glance in when passing).

I have always liked the way Pizza Punks is inside, it’s a very modern and funky look and my feelings tonight are just the same.

We were seated at the window, so we got a nice view of Glasgow and the passing people.

Starter / While we wait :

chilli cheese ,garlic and rosemary foccacia topped with honey £3.50

Firstly this wasn’t Foccacia it was more like bruschetta with the topping.

Apart from it being more like bruschetta, this was really tasty and had a little kick to it.

This was probably too much as a starter for me, even though we had half each as it was very filling.

Pizza :

Tonight I shared the pizza and just like last time this pizza was very nice, the base was just thin enough which is just the way I like them.

The flavour was nice to, not very spicy which is perfect for me and an ok amount of chorizo. Personally, it could have had more chorizo but that’s a personal thing.

Overall :

Overall just like last time I had a nice evening, and can’t really fault the food or the service.

For value for money, you can’t go wrong with a £9 pizza, with any topping of your choice. Pizza Punks and Paesano Pizza are my two favourite places in Glasgow so far for Pizza.

I don’t know what the issues other people have had here are, either it has been bad but I have just been lucky or they might have just been in on a busy day and that’s affected things.
