Glasgow Rum Club: St Nicholas Abbey Barbados: Review

The Event

This month’s Rum Club in Glasgow was an absolute treat! Held in a more intimate setting than usual, it was a cosy evening that allowed us to hear everything clearly and interact more easily with fellow rum enthusiasts. There’s something special about a smaller crowd – it makes the experience feel more personal and engaging, and August’s event was a perfect example of this.

The star of the night was rum from St. Nicholas Abbey in Barbados.

We had the pleasure of trying three different varieties: the White Rum, the 8-year-old, and the 5-year-old.

Each had its own unique character, but it was the White Rum that truly captured my attention. It was incredibly interesting, with a delightful vanilla note that lingered beautifully. What made it stand out was the second sip – not the first, but the second – where you were hit with this amazing creamy vanilla flavour with just a hint of banana. It was an experience in itself, and I can honestly say it was one of the most memorable rums I’ve tried in a long time.

Although it’s a bit on the pricey side, I’d say it’s 100% worth every penny.

My second favourite of the evening was the 8-year-old rum.

This one was simply amazing and is perfect for sipping. It had a depth and smoothness that made it enjoyable with each taste. I can easily see myself enjoying a glass of this on a quiet evening, savouring the rich flavours that St. Nicholas Abbey is known for.

The night started on a high note, too, with a welcome cocktail – a rum punch that was absolutely to die for. It was super addictive and bursting with flavour. I could have easily sipped on that all night long, but with such great rums lined up for tasting, I made sure to pace myself. The punch set the mood perfectly, warming us up for the amazing rum journey ahead.

If you haven’t been to Glasgow’s Monthly Rum Club yet, you’re missing out. Held on the last week of every month in the heart of the city centre, in Merchant City, it’s a fantastic way to explore different rums, learn more about what you’re drinking, and have a good laugh with like-minded people. Each session brings a new set of flavours and stories, making it a must-attend for any rum lover.

Do check it out – you won’t be disappointed!
