Anges De Sucres (London)

7 Minerva Road
London, United Kingdom NW10 6HJ

Anges De Sucre means ‘sugar angels’ in French. The Anges bakery was founded in 2011 by Reshmi Bennett upon her return to the UK from Paris after she had trained under several truly amazing Michelin-starred chefs and learnt the art of baking. Reshmi still works in the bakery on a daily basis. She designs every single cake. Together with a small team of staff and exceptional suppliers Anges de Sucre delivers cakes all over London and further afield.

Anges De Sucre started by making macarons which were very ‘on-trend’ at the time. Like many tiny acorns that grow into oak trees, it started in a kitchen and Anges De Sucre are now the official cake supplier to Selfridges, London and have a team of awesome chefs who help create beautiful cakes for people to enjoy in London, and beyond –

Some of our more unusual cake creations

We love cake, and we have a huge range of off the shelf birthday cakes that are accompinent to any celebration. Sometimes, however, only bespoke will do. Whether it’s that landmark birthday celebration or you want your wedding cake to wow your guests, some occasions do call for something special. We thought we’d go through some of our truly special creations over the last 12 months to give you some inspiration and (hopefully) bring a smile to your face.

The Gladiator

We were contacted recently by the wife of a history nut who had a penchant for the Ridley Scott epic, Gladiator, who needed a cake for a special birthday. A cake based on the Colosseum made perfect sense. We could use our signature bake style to build the iconic stadium. But, as this cake was for a big birthday we knew we had to make this one truly special. So to make the walls of the cake we decided to use cookie dough, so we could recreate the walls, but also add some crunch.

This is where the bake became less straightforward. You see, our cookie creation had to wrap around a six-inch cake and cakes, as you may know, are generally not straight!

When the cookie was baked it was time to ice. I wanted to keep the weathered effect of The Colosseum as it currently is so, as such, used some gold lustre to keep the weathered effect of the building. Just because it’s fun doesn’t mean it has to be inauthentic! Now it was time for the cake itself, for which I made our signature chocolate bake with vanilla buttercream.

Fitting the cookie around the cake caused a moment of panic but were pleased to see it fit like a glove. This bake was topped with a fat gladiator made from buttercream. His tassel skirt and sandals were the parts of him we loved the most!

Barbie Inspired 60th Birthday cake

We think our customers are cool. Some of the design requests we get for bespoke birthday cakes truly leave us awestruck at just how creative people can be. Making this Barbie cake for a customer’s 60th birthday, who we reckon by her choice of cake is probably the epitome of cool. We decided to use a mash up of our best selling Pink Flamingo and Pink Ballerina cake. It’s Barbie! Pink was the only way to go with this one…

The three layers of cake were all different, just like Barbie could be when she was out and about with Ken!  For this one we went for three different sponges, cookies and crease, pistachio and pink vanilla. The final (tiny top tier) was augmented with macarons, chocolate feathers, candied popcorn, a golden tiara and, as the centerpiece, a beautiful golden chocolate shoe.

The shoe itself was made using a mould which was sprayed with gold lustre, we then poured tempered white chocolate into it. We had to temper the chocolate otherwise it wouldn’t come out of the mold. The tempering doesn’t just enable the shoe to come out of the mould easily but also to retain its smooth texture. The shoe is then tidied up with a hot palette knife. The shoe really is one of our favourite cake toppers and we can’t wait to get it out again!

Finally the cake was decorated with flowers — in pink and white of course!
