I recently decided to treat myself to a solo trip, a much-needed break, as I haven’t really stopped for a few years to just relax and switch off.
I finally booked a trip to Alicante, which has been on my massive travel list for a while. I was only going for two full days, returning home on the third, so I wanted to make sure I planned it carefully: to visit the best spots, try some great food, and enjoy a relaxing little getaway.
For my trip, I decided to use a website (which also has an iOS app) called Wanderlog. I’m not getting any commission for mentioning them, I used a free account for all my planning. I’m suggesting it because I found it really useful, especially once I had added a few places I wanted to visit. It allowed me to see everything clearly and rearrange my itinerary so I could move from one spot to the next smoothly and efficiently.
Below, you’ll find a few of the places I visited. If you decide to visit Alicante, I hope this blog helps you plan your trip. And if you try out Wanderlog, I hope it helps make your travel planning easier too!
The hotel I stayed in was Hotel Alicante Gran Sol, Affiliated by Meliá and you can read my review here.
Castillo de Santa Bárbara

One of the first things I did when I arrived in the city, after throwing my case in my room, was head straight out to start exploring, and I made my way to the castle.
The castle is completely free to visit, which is always a bonus. There are two ways to enter: you can walk up the path, which would probably take around 20–25 minutes depending on your level of fitness and walking speed, or you can enter from the front through a long tunnel and take the lift up to the castle, which is the option I chose.
The lift costs less than €3, which is really good value, and if you’re under a certain age, you can use it for free.
Once you exit into the castle grounds, the area is really beautiful and well-maintained. Walking around the grounds, you can see some of the old rooms and pathways, which were really cool. But the main thing everyone loves, and you can clearly see why, are the views. From every corner, you get another stunning view of Alicante.
Overall, wandering around the castle grounds was a great experience. I had a lovely sunny day, which made it even better, and it was one of the spots on my list that I really wanted to see. I’m so glad I went because the castle was absolutely beautiful.
Platja Postiguet

The next stop on my list, which I actually passed on the way to the castle but didn’t stop to properly enjoy at the time, was the beach.
Walking along the promenade and just standing looking out, the beach is absolutely beautiful. It’s extremely clean, with gorgeous palm trees dotted along the sand. Once again, I had a lovely sunny day, which made it even better.
Unfortunately, I didn’t pack any beach clothes because I was only here for a very short stay. But when I return, I definitely plan on having a beach day or two.
I also took a slow walk along the shoreline and stopped at one of the beachfront spots for a couple of cocktails, simply enjoying the sounds of the sea and the views around me. It was really, really nice.
El Carrer dels Bolets

One of the next stops on my list was a little funky street that I had seen in photos before. I always wondered what the story was behind it, but I could never really find a clear answer.
When I finally came across it, I spotted all these different mushroom sculptures, some with snails sitting on top and even one giant mushroom sticking out of the ground. It’s very quirky, and I genuinely felt like a kid again while walking around looking at everything.
Maybe that’s the whole idea, to make us big kids feel like kids again. It’s a great area to stroll around, and there are also lots of lovely snack spots and quirky little shops nearby, so it’s definitely worth checking out.
Barri Vell – Santa Creu

This was one of the spots I really wanted to see. I had seen a few people on TikTok show this place for two main reasons: first, how lovely the little area is with all the beautifully decorated and painted houses, and second, for one of the views you can get of Alicante. So of course, I had to visit, and it did not disappoint.
I really took my time walking around the streets here, looking at all the different houses and just taking in the atmosphere. As you can probably tell from the photos, it was very quiet at this time, which made it a really calm and enjoyable walk.
I then reached the viewpoint, and yes, it’s mostly of rooftops, but it’s still a really, really nice view. I stood there for a while, just taking in the sounds and the sights before moving on, and it was lovely. If you do get the chance, I highly recommend coming to see these beautiful houses and stopping to take in the view for yourself.
Passeig Esplanada d’Espanya

Obviously, one of the main sights you constantly see in Alicante is the main walking area, and you end up passing through it quite a lot. I walked through it several times during my stay, and it really is a lovely stretch to walk up and down.
You truly get to take in the atmosphere of Alicante at different times of the day—early in the morning when it’s quiet and people are out jogging, in the middle of the afternoon when everyone is heading to wherever they’re going, and in the evening when the whole area is beautifully lit up. It’s a great place to visit at different times of day just to soak up the atmosphere and enjoy it properly.
Overall
Overall, my visit to Alicante was really lovely, and if it weren’t for budget constraints and trying to clear a few bills, I would have happily stayed longer and enjoyed a couple of beach days, as I mentioned at the start of this blog.
Everyone I spoke to in the little cafés and restaurants was very friendly and welcoming, and I found the streets to be exceptionally clean. I didn’t experience anything negative at all. Overall, I had a fantastic time and would definitely return.
If you’re looking for places to snack and eat, be sure to check out some of my previous posts. I did a few small reviews of the restaurants I visited and some of the snacks I tried, and they’re all highly recommended, so definitely give them a look.
