The Marine Hotel Afternoon Tea (North Berwick) 2024 : Review

Visit & Vibes

I decided to book an afternoon tea here for my mum’s birthday since she likes North Berwick. From the photos, it looked very appealing.

Upon arrival, I was pleased to find a car park for the hotel. Inside, the hotel appeared very nice.

We were directed to the Lawn section, but when we arrived, there was no record of our booking. A staff member then checked the bar area and found our reservation. They seated us in the window section, which had a lovely view. While the view was enjoyable, I wondered why we were not seated in the originally booked area. Nonetheless, we had a pleasant experience with a beautiful view.

SAVOURY

SELECTION OF ARTISAN FINGER SANDWICHES
ARTICHOKE & GOATS CHEESE TART
PORK, ONION & THYME SAUSAGE ROLL

On arrival, the afternoon tea looked delightful, and I couldn’t wait to dig in. I started with the sandwiches, which were very fresh and tasty. The variety of sandwiches was excellent, allowing us to easily share and enjoy the flavours we liked while avoiding those we didn’t.

Next, I tried the goat’s cheese tart. It was extremely tasty, and it’s a shame there were only two because I could have easily eaten many more.

Moving on to the sausage roll—wow! This is the best sausage roll I have ever tasted. I would even book this afternoon tea again just to have the sausage roll. It was incredibly delicious, and I would love to know where they source it from because I would buy it in abundance. That’s how good it was.

SCONES

PLAIN & FRUIT SCONES
HOMEMADE STRAWBERRY JAM & CLOTTED CREAM

Moving on to the scones, I opted for the fruit ones since my mum doesn’t like fruit scones. To be honest, these were quite hard and broke up easily while I was eating them, making it a bit messy. The clotted cream was a highlight, as it’s the only cream that should be served with afternoon tea.

However, the strawberry jam was a major disappointment. It was extremely runny, almost like water, which contributed to the messiness when combined with the crumbly scones. This part of the experience was quite disappointing. Although the scones were tasty, the watery jam and easily crumbling scones made it a bit of a letdown. The clotted cream somewhat redeemed this part, but overall, it fell short of expectations.

SWEET

BLOOD ORANGE BRULEE TART
CARROT CAKE
CHOCOLATE & COFFEE CHOUX
MATCHA MACARON

After the scones, it was time to move on to the sweets. I tried the blood orange brûlée tart, which was interesting. It had a pleasant blood orange flavour, and since I had never tried a blood orange brûlée before, it was a unique experience.

Next, I tried the chocolate and coffee choux. These were very nice, though I wish the chocolate and coffee flavours had been a bit stronger, but that’s just my personal preference.

The macarons were also really tasty. Unfortunately, I didn’t have any room left to try the carrot cake, but it looked very appealing.

Final Thoughts…

Overall, my mother enjoyed the afternoon tea as part of her birthday gift. The view was nice, and the service was acceptable. However, the scones and jam were a big disappointment. Overall, I think the afternoon tea was just okay.

Afterwards, I had a pleasant walk along North Berwick Beach. The sun was out, and it was a gorgeous day, which provided a lovely end to a nice day.
