Lively and informative “Talks at the Bar” are launched at SOBR, prompting debate and discussion for the sober curious

As it continues to build a reputation as an intimate and fully inclusive events space, SOBR Bar, Aberdeen’s alcohol-free bar, situated on Thistle Street, has announced that it is introducing a series of lively and informative “Talks at the Bar”, to prompt debate and discussion for the growing number of “sober curious”.

Ellon mum Jade Auld, who runs the Instagram account @scottishandsober, will kick off this new monthly happening at SOBR on Friday 9 January, at 7pm. Since ditching alcohol, Jade Auld has been documenting her life of sobriety, attracting 13,000 followers in the process.

Those interested in coming along can purchase tickets through SOBR’s Instagram page. Tickets are priced at £15 with a glass of non-alcoholic fizz included in the price.

Other guest speakers lined up to appear at SOBR in the coming months include local Aberdonian influencer, Mikey Banks, who also now documents his inspiring journey without drink. Speaking honestly and openly about his challenges, including how he was inspired to overcome addiction through the loss of a close friend who took his own life, has led Mikey to have 20k followers across his social platforms, together with a loyal fan base. He aims to share the ups and downs of recovery, allowing his followers to witness the reality of addiction, and the courage it takes to quit.

Sarah Rochester is also on the bill at SOBR. Sarah, who says you don’t need to hit ‘rock bottom’ to quit alcohol, decided she wanted to stop drinking, feeling that the disadvantages of it had begun to outweigh any social benefits.

Her mission, to say to people that they don’t need a reason to stop and that it can be a positive choice they make for themselves, brought her to the attention of Aberdeen’s TEDx platform in 2022, where she joined a list of live speakers. Now, several years on and talking regularly on the subject, she is looking forward to coming to SOBR.

Finally, Kim Lam, also a proud Aberdonian, will share her story at SOBR. Living with a lung condition and currently waiting for a transplant, Kim will discuss the social pressures and difficulties those who should not drink due to health conditions, can face.

“Bars are traditionally places where people gather, talk and enjoy a few drinks,” said SOBR owner, Kate Kenyon. “People like getting together in a social setting for these very reasons. SOBR is no different. It’s just that our drinks are all alcohol-free.”

“Introducing these talks will add an extra dimension to our friendly and inclusive bar,” continued Kate, who expressed her delight that Jade, local to the North East, was going to be the first to host SOBR’S inaugural talks.

“Jade is the perfect person with whom to explore the growing “sober curious” movement,” said Kate. “Through these talks, we want to offer support to those who are now sober, and want to stay that way, and those wanting to take a step away from alcohol but are perhaps finding it hard.”

Kate remarked that she was open to suggestions and approaches from anyone on the local talking circuit.

“We want to explore different and difficult topics, and make our talks a monthly highlight at SOBR. Please get in touch if you’d like to have a chat with me about getting involved in some way.”

Commenting on her forthcoming talk at SOBR, Jade Auld said: “Community was a huge part of what helped me stay sober – and seeing a venue in Aberdeen champion that inclusivity feels incredible. I can’t wait to celebrate five years sober by connecting with others who are curious or fully embracing alcohol-free living. Nobody should feel out of place for putting their wellbeing first.”

She continued by saying: “I’ll be openly sharing the story behind my sobriety – the messy parts, the mindset shifts and all the benefits I’ve felt over the last five years. My hope is that people leave feeling empowered and maybe even excited about what an alcohol-free life could offer them.”

In the past few weeks, SOBR has been busy hosting a Christmas wreath making class, with a collaboration with local florist and food business, Flower Vogue and By Platter, respectively. The bar is working its way through other exciting food collaborations with a host of local artisan suppliers, bakeries, cafes, and cheesemongers. A wine and cheese night will also take place in March.

As a result of demand from its growing customer base, it is also selling SOBR Gift Vouchers, available for purchase in person at the bar.

“It would appear that our clientele would like to give the gift of SOBR to others this Christmas,” said Kate. “We are really pleased that in such a short space of time, people are keen to share SOBR with family and friends. It really bodes well for the future and I’m very excited about what 2026 will bring!”
