Scotland’s top independent hotel and spa has added to its attractions by opening a new casual dining restaurant and bar steeped in local history.
The Oak at The Cairndale Hotel and Spa, which carries the same name as the one which was at the heart of the town of Dumfries for decades, provides a fascinating facility for guests as well as a ‘Go To’ local venue for meals or drinks.
Packed with links to the hotel’s past associations with the town, it features a statement solid oak bar and furnishings, wide range of eclectic fittings, artwork, bric-a-brac, antiques, conversation pieces and its original red Neon sign

Earlier this year the 86 bedroom Cairndale – owned and run by the Wallace family for well over 40 years, was voted Scotland’s Best Independent Hotel in the Scottish Excellence Awards and Best Spa in the Scottish Hotels of the Year Awards.
Its latest enhancement follows the opening in July 2024 of its £2m adults only spa – the only one in Scotland to carry the UK Spa Guide’s highest rating, the ‘5 Star Bubble’ award.
Director Matthew Wallace Junior commented: “ The Oak is the culmination of another Cairndale vision, re-imagined and re-created in keeping with guests’ high expectations and the latest culinary trends. It’s embedded in local nostalgia and will be a major long term asset to Dumfries and South West Scotland.”
He added: “It builds on the huge success of the spa but will be a great attraction in its own right. No matter where you sit there is something fascinating to look at.”
The Oak is aimed at a wide range of customers such as family get- togethers and celebrations, lunches, intimate date night dinners or small group outings.
Located in the centre of Dumfries, it has free on-site parking and is a few hundred yards from the town’s railway station.
The Oak is open from Thursday to Sunday. See theoakrestaurant.co.uk. Book online, call 01387-254111 or email hello@cairndalehotel.co.uk
