Living with Tinnitus, the silence killer

light-567760_1280

Tinnitus is the hearing of sound when no external sound is present. While often described as a ringing, it may also sound like a clicking, hiss or roaring. Rarely, unclear voices or music are heard. The sound may be soft or loud, low pitched or high pitched and appear to be coming from one ear or both.

Turn your radio off, TV etc and listen….can you hear that? No? That’s the sound of silence….that’s not what I hear….wish I did.

I have been living with tinitus now for close to 10 years, I can remember when it started to this day. I was going to King Tuts to see a band and I had a cold, the band I saw was a heavy metal band and very loud and after it I came out with a high pitch tone in one ear.
I had had this tone before but it normally lasted a day or up to 5, 10 days passed and still had it….3 weeks and still and this is when I knew this strange sound was now living with me for life.

At this point I was going crazy looking for stuff online that would help, I found pens, pills, strange devices etc but all couldn’t take it away nothing can unfortunately so don’t be fooled by these devices.

For me its more noticeable at night, and when I am sleepy, stressed or in a room that has no background noise.

I have learned to live with it and it doesn’t affect my sleeping or my day to day life, yes I would like it to go and experience a normal no sound in my ear but I don’t think that will ever happen again.

On a scale of 1 to 10 volume level, mine is maybe around the 3 or 4 and only in my left ear. I can watch TV and hear it but it obviously depends on the volume of the TV. I do know some people have it where its above a 7, which must really be annoying and have a bad affect on their day to day lives.

My best advice to anyone with this is, if you do go to concerts stay far back and wear ear plus. They don’t make you loose out on the fun of the event, just stop your Tinitus from possibly getting worse. Also just accept it and try not to focus on it too much you will gradually ignore it till night time or sleepy or stressful times.

Please do take care when at concerts etc, some cope ok with Tinitus and others find it a very big struggle.
