The Event

This month’s Rum Club journey transported us to the heart of Cuba with Ron Santiago de Cuba Rum.

Upon arrival and ascending the stairs into the event space, the air was filled with Cuban music, further enhancing the anticipation of what lay ahead. As I explored the area tonight, I noticed four distinct rums, promising a delightful experience with a variety of Cuban styles.

Additionally, we were greeted with a delightful welcome cocktail featuring the Ron Carta Blanca, a drink so enjoyable that I could have indulged in it repeatedly. Its ease of consumption and refreshing taste make it a cocktail I intend to recreate at home, as I am eager to discover its recipe.

The Rum Club commenced with a fantastic presentation that provided us with a wealth of information about Cuba, its history, and the origins of the rums. This was followed by a highly anticipated tasting session, which was the highlight for everyone in attendance. However, it must be noted that the presentation itself was exceptionally well-delivered and informative, arguably one of the best presentations we have experienced thus far.

The rum tasting commenced with the Ron Carta Blanca, followed by the 8-year Ron Anejo , then progressed to the Ron Extra Anejo 11 years, and concluded with the Ron Extra Anejo 12 years.

Personally, I found the 8-year and the 11-year varieties most enjoyable, with the latter offering significantly better value for money in my opinion, considering both taste and price. While the Ron Carta Blanca was pleasant, I believe it is better suited for cocktails rather than sipping.

After the tasting session, we were treated to a 20-year rum from Ron Santiago de Cuba. This particular one was truly exceptional, as one would anticipate given its 20-year aging process, but it comes with a hefty price tag. It’s undoubtedly a choice reserved for dedicated rum enthusiasts who appreciate indulging in a premium sipping experience. It was a privilege to sample this exquisite rum.

Moving on, I thoroughly enjoyed tonight’s rum event overall. The Cuban music added a delightful ambiance to the occasion. The rum, which was entirely new to me, has now piqued my interest, especially the 11-year variety, which stood out as my favorite among the four tasted. It’s definitely on my list for future purchases to enjoy at home.
