I was recently invited to the Riva Boutique Hotel in Helensburgh for dinner, bed, and breakfast. Having not visited Helensburgh in over 12 years, I was genuinely looking forward to returning, exploring the area, and discovering what the hotel had to offer.

Upon arrival, I immediately noticed the hotel’s prime waterfront location and its charming, almost postcard-perfect aesthetic. It looked incredibly inviting, so I headed inside to check in and explore the property.

Perched directly on the waterfront, this boutique hotel offers a unique blend of style and scenery, making it a popular choice for those exploring the area or visiting nearby Loch Lomond.

During my recent stay, I had the chance to experience their hospitality firsthand. From the moment you see the exterior, you know you’re in for a stay with character. Here is my honest breakdown of what it’s like to stay at this Helensburgh gem.

About The Hotel

Nestled on the scenic shores of the Clyde and just a short journey from the breathtaking landscapes of Loch Lomond, Riva is a stylish seafront hotel, restaurant, and bar that captures the charm and heritage of Helensburgh. Perfectly positioned in the town centre along a historic waterfront lined with characterful Victorian buildings, Riva is a gateway to both relaxation and discovery.

Arrival and Check-In

Upon entering the hotel, you are greeted by the bar and bistro area. The check-in desk is located just to the left. Once you have checked in, you can pass through the doors and head to your room.

My room was a cozy, well-styled sanctuary that perfectly captured that authentic boutique hotel feel. The decor was thoughtfully curated, featuring a plush bed and tasteful furnishings that made the entire space feel warm and inviting.

One of my favourite features was the seating area by the window, which offered a lovely view and a tranquil spot to relax. The room was equipped with everything a modern traveller needs, including a large TV, a coffee machine, and a selection of teas and coffee, perfect for a slow morning before heading out to explore.

Beyond the room’s cozy vibe and thoughtful amenities, I particularly loved the addition of a record player with a small selection of vinyl in the drawer. It was such a charming touch. Personally, I’ve always felt that listening to records offers a unique warmth, making it the perfect feature for a relaxing stay.

Bathroom

The en-suite bathroom was a highlight, offering a clean, modern aesthetic. The striking blue tiling in the shower area gave the space a luxurious, spa-like atmosphere.

The walk-in rainfall shower was excellent, and I was pleased to see high-quality toiletries provided. The vanity area was well-lit and functional, with plenty of space for personal items. Everything felt fresh, bright, and well-maintained, providing a perfect, refreshing start to each day.

Breakfast / Dining Area

It was time for dinner, so I headed downstairs and took a seat to look at the menu. There was a great selection of dishes, and many of them caught my eye. The restaurant recommends ordering two to three small plates, which is a fantastic idea because it allows you to try a variety of items. It didn’t take long for me to decide which three I wanted.

SALAME CALABRESE, PROSCIUTTO DI PARMA, PECORINO

My dinner service began perfectly with the swift arrival of the Salame Calabrese, Prosciutto di Parma, and Pecorino pizzette. Although listed as a pizzette, implying a smaller size, the dish was a good size, you could even share this with someone as a light starter.

The flavour profile was truly impressive. The combination of the spicy Salame Calabrese and the salty Prosciutto di Parma worked brilliantly together, balanced perfectly by the sharp Pecorino cheese.

It tasted fantastic and served as the perfect introduction to the meal, setting a very high standard for the dishes to follow.

CACIO AND PEPPE SCRIGNI, CONFIT EGG, PARMESAN CREAM

Next up was the Cacio e Pepe Scrigni with a confit egg and parmesan cream, and it was truly a standout dish. From the moment it arrived at the table, the presentation was really nice, with the vibrant colors and delicate plating making it look as good as it tasted.

The quality of the cooking was immediately apparent. The pasta was perfectly cooked, offering that ideal texture that held together nicely while remaining tender. Each bite was packed with deep, savory notes, and the flavour was extremely tasty, perfectly capturing the classic essence of Cacio e Pepe elevated by the richness of the parmesan cream.

The confit egg added a wonderful, luxurious element to the plate, marrying all the ingredients together into a cohesive and indulgent experience. It was such a delightful dish that, despite having other courses, I could’ve easily finished another one without a second thought.

SCALLOP & PRAWN PANCIOTTI, BEURRE BLANC, DILL

The final course of the evening was the Scallop & Prawn Panciotti, served in a delicate beurre blanc with a hint of dill.

The presentation was exquisite; as you can see in my posted pic, the vibrant sauce and thoughtful garnish made the dish look like a work of art before I even took the first bite.

The balance of flavors was exceptional. The seafood filling inside the pasta was sweet and tender, and it paired beautifully with the rich, velvety beurre blanc.

Every mouthful felt sophisticated and well-executed, highlighting the fresh quality of the ingredients and the chef’s attention to detail.

This was a truly memorable way to round out the meal. The combination of textures was spot on, and the subtle herb notes tied everything together perfectly. It was such a satisfying and flavourful dish that I found myself savouring every drop of the sauce long after the pasta was gone.

ALMAFI SPRITZ £9.00
LIMONCELLO, ITALICUS VERMOUTH, BASIL, PROSECCO, SODA

If you are a fan of limoncello like I am, this drink is an absolute must-try. As soon as I saw the Amalfi Spritz on the menu, I knew I had to order it, and I am so glad I did, it did not disappoint!

This cocktail is perfection in balance. The combination of zesty limoncello and the floral, complex notes of Italicus creates a beautifully bright base, while the basil adds a sophisticated finish that sets it apart from your average spritz. Topped with crisp Prosecco and a splash of soda, it is incredibly refreshing and perfectly crafted.

It has officially claimed the top spot as my favourite cocktail. Next time I’m in the area and not behind the wheel, I will 100% be ordering another one. Highly recommended!

• The Hill House: This is Helensburgh’s premier attraction and an internationally renowned masterpiece designed by architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh. It is managed by the National Trust for Scotland and features a unique architectural “box” that protects the house while offering visitors elevated walkways for a stunning new perspective of the building.Wild About Argyll

Final Thoughts…

First of all, a big thanks to the team for the invitation; I had a fantastic time! The room was incredibly cozy, and dinner was absolutely amazing. A huge thank you to the staff, who were extremely friendly and helpful, and to the chef for the excellent meal.

My stay was truly wonderful from start to finish. If I’m back in Helensburgh, I will definitely be popping in for more food. If I need a place to stay overnight, I now know exactly where to go. I’m going to add this to my ‘top hotels‘ page. If you’re in the area, this is the place to be, definitely stop by for a meal, and you have to try the Limoncello spritz; it’s amazing!
