I have passed Usha’s many times when walking around Byres Road, and always thought I need to stop in here and check it out.

From the outside it looked very nice inside, and always when I have looked its been busy.

Finally got round to checking it out….

We were welcomed and shown to our little booth, which was situated near the window so I had a good view of outside and the people passing.

Inside has a very nice relaxed feeling, and there is some Indian music playing in the background and like always I knew a few songs which was nice.

The Food…

PANEER PAKORA £4.25
HOME MADE PANEER INFUSED WITH A TAMARIND AND MINT CHUTNEY, DIPPED IN OUR GRAM FLOUR BATTER AND FRIED

I have never tried this done this way, normally I would have Saag Paneer so this was going to be interesting.

It was OK, there wasn’t much flavour, using the added sauce this helped a lot.

I wouldn’t get this again, but I am glad I tried it to see what it was like.

Main Course

ALOO GOBI £4.75
MADE WITH POTATOES, CAULIFLOWER AND INDIAN SPICES

I have had this before at Chaakoo Bombay Cafe long ago, and I loved it and its flavour so I thought I would have it here and see what is like.

For me the flavours were nice, but the cauliflower could have been chopped up a little more rather than one piece….this could me being a little too fussy?

Overall it was nice, but not as nice as the one I had in Chaakoo Bombay Cafe, I would try something else next time

Overall

Overall my first visit was a nice mixed visit.

I half enjoyed the food tonight, and the service was good but for me inside I found the atmosphere a little lacking….but that could just be me or tonights experience.

There are still lots of places in the West End of Glasgow that I have not tried, so tonight was my time to try Brel.

This was my first time here, and my first impression was this is a very nice looking place. I saw they had a beer garden, and this looked very nice and probably nicer when the sun is out.

The Food :

Tonights visit I used a recent purchase from Itison, it was a main each but I can’t comment on the cost as my girlfriend purchased this and I didn’t ask.

Food time….

1/2 Rack of BBQ baby back ribs with slaw £7.50

I have my favourite place in town for ribs, so I thought lets see how Brel does them.

On arrival presentation was ok, the smell was very good and visually it looked very nice….now to see how they tasted.

These were very nice, the meat just slide off the bone which is the way it should be and the BBQ sauce added that extra flavour.

Brel’s Seafood ‘Paella’ made with pearl barley, pan fried sea trout, mussels, squid & saffron £N/A (part of the itison offer)

IMG_0720.jpg

This dish sounded nice, but I did fail to spot it wasn’t rice and it was using pearl barley.

Visually on arrival it looked nice, but thats when I noticed it wasn’t a normal Paella.

The fish smell wasn’t as strong as I would have liked, but I dug in and gave it a shot. For me this was just so so, I even had to add salt and pepper for me to give it that little bit of flavour (which I don’t normally do).

I personally wouldn’t order this again, as for me it was a very disappointing. I think if I had spotted it was made with pearl barley instead of rice I would have just ordered a burger or another dish.

Belgian Waffle with your choice of topping (Banana, chocolate and Vanilla ice cream) £5.50

IMG_0723.jpg

There is always room for sweets 🙂

This sounded good on paper and looked good, but did it taste as good as it looks?

I couldn’t wait to dig in as I love chocolate and have a very sweet tooth.

So….first thing I noticed was the waffle was a little difficult to cut, maybe its pre-made and been sitting? not sure but waffles should be soft. Secondly the waffle should have been warm, it wasn’t so these two factors made what could have been a great end to the meal just so so.

These two points could be my own personal opinion, you may like your waffles done like this but for me if these got corrected it would be a really nice dish.

Overall :

Overall my first visit was just ok, it had its ups and its downs.

Would I go back? I will give Brel one more shot at some point as I feel it may have just been a bad selection on my part and I will order something else.
