This is an area I have not really explored yet, so I decided to take a look at some restaurant names and find something I would like to try.

Ranjit’s Kitchen was the first to jump out at me, so I had a quick look at the menu the night before to give me a head start on arrival.

Looking Around

On entry Ranjit’s Kitchen, it was very bright, warm and had a nice cosy feel.

We were welcomed and shown to a table, inside doesn’t have many seats and you can’t book in advance so you may need to wait for a table.

The Food…

Looking around everyone was enjoying the food, and it smelled very good….so I couldn’t wait for my dinner to arrive.

Starter

Daal of the Day £3.95
Panjabi lentils or Panjabi curry in a large bowl, served with 2 rotis

img_5897

I am not a soup person of any kind really, but it was cold today and I thought why not let’s try it and see what it’s like.

So as you can see from the photo above, that was today’s Daal.

For me this was just ok, I knew to start/ordering this I might not like it but I thought I would give it a try….as I said it was ok for me.

Would I order this again? not really but that’s a personal preference.

Main Course

Ranjit’s special pakora £3.95
Made with a mix of cauliflower, spinach, onions, potatoes and spices in gramflour batter served with chutney

img_5898

This is one of my favourites anytime I get an Indian, so I was looking forward to this dish.

This was really nice and mega fresh!

The flavours were really nice and light, and the batter was perfect so thin but had a nice crisp to it.

Tonight I could have easily had another batch of this!!

Mango Lassi £1.95
a cooling yoghurt based drink

img_5896

This is my MUST HAVE Indian drink, every time I go to an Indian restaurant I always have to order this.

For me this was just so so, it wasn’t sweet like I have had it in many other places but it was nice.

Sweets

Now, this is the part I always like as I have a sweet tooth, so now it was time to try some Indian sweets.

Ladoo £2
a handmade ball-shaped traditional sweet made with gramflour and sugary syrup.

img_5902

I have never had these so I didn’t know what to expect…

These were very nice!! I liked the texture, the flavour and everything about them!

Can’t wait to have these again!

Barfi £2
a smooth fudge like sweet, made with milk, sugar and cream

img_5901

This was recommended by a member of staff tonight, so I ordered them to see if it was a good recommendation or not.

Again mmmm so good I don’t know what I liked better Ladoo or this.

Snowflake Gulab Jamun £2.50
dough balls fried and soaked in sweet syrup and then rolled in delicate coconut flakes.

img_5900

I am a big fan of Gulub Jamen and don’t have it as much as I would like so I had to order it tonight along with the rest of the sweets.

So this was an interesting take on Gulub Jamen with the coconut flakes….presentation looked nice and the taste was ok.

Personally, I prefer the original way where they are warm and soaked in syrup….but that’s just me and my sweet tooth talking.

Overall

Tonight I had a really nice time, I enjoyed the food and more so the sweets!!!

I can’t wait to go back to try more dishes and have the sweets again.

See you soon guys.

Zest (Edinburgh) : Review

I have never been to Edinburgh so much in one year than I have this year and guess what I am back again to review an Indian restaurant.

The guys at Zest were really nice to invite me to come and try a few dishes from their menu, which I kindly accepted and added the date to my calendar.

I took the bus from Glasgow bus station to Edinburgh this time, as the last time I took the train which is mega costly…this time the bus was £10 return which is really good…..so you have no excuse not to come to Edinburgh to try this place or the other places I have reviewed.

First Impression :

On entering I was greeted by the staff and asked where I would like to sit, I told them wherever and they showed me to a window seat so I could enjoy the view while eating.

The atmosphere tonight was very nice, as it wasn’t too busy when I went in, but gradually did get busier….plus they do have music playing in the background but at a nice level it’s not overpowering or disturbing your chats at the table.

Time to look at the menu…

As always the prices in Edinburgh are always that little bit more than Glasgow, but you are looking at about £1 to £3 max so it’s not too much more.

The menu here looked really good, and price wise good too. There were so many dishes I wanted to try, but I selected a starter and a main.

The Food…

The manager? owner? came over to the table and introduced himself and suggested rather than I order a starter and a main he would bring a sample of the starters and a few curries to try……this sounded perfect as I was a hungry boy.

Starter Sample

IMG_5173

Normally I can tell you what the dish name is and its cost, but since this was a sample of a few starters that is a little harder.

On the plate was: Vegetable Pakora, Chicken Pakora, Lamb and Chicken Tikka

I am not just saying this but the Vegetable and Chicken Pakora was really!!!! good! and the Lamb was so so tender it was cooked to perfection.

I am very impressed with this starter, as I was only going to select the Vegetable Pakora so it was great that I got to try more.

Main Course

WOW, so our table was very full of food once all this arrived.

So we were brought four dishes, and they all looked good. The above photo shows all for together, and individually so you can see them better.

Dish 1 : Matar Paneer

If you have had Saag Paneer before then this is very similar, and just as nice and so easy to eat. It was cooked perfectly and had a really nice taste.

Dish 2 : A Lamb dish (can’t remember its exact name)

Just like the starter the lamb in this curry was so so tender, again cooked to perfection and the best Lamb dish I have had!

Dish 3 : P297 Special

This is a chicken dish, and again just like the starter the chicken was perfectly cooked!

Dish 4: Salmon Country Captain

The salmon just broke up, and the flavours mmmm I am getting hungry just typing this.

And there was more…

I was also given some rice and a Pashwari Naan (my fav)

IMG_5178

This is my favourite naan, as I have a sweet tooth and this is a sweet naan.

The bread was nice and thin, yet just crispy enough and the filling very sweet so it was perfect for me.

I could have easily had more of this 🙂

Firstly I would like to thank Zest for my invite, and all the really good food.

I would also like to say as always just because I got an invite, the review you just read is 100% my own thoughts and 100% honest.

Overall I am glad I got to come to Zest, I had a really good meal and a very relaxing evening.

Zest will be another one from Edinburgh, that I will be adding to my top spots so do check them out.

Thanks guys and see you soon 🙂

Ushas Indian Street Food (West End, Glasgow) : Review

2 Byres Road

I have passed Usha’s many times when walking around Byres Road, and always thought I need to stop in here and check it out.

From the outside it looked very nice inside, and always when I have looked its been busy.

Finally got round to checking it out….

We were welcomed and shown to our little booth, which was situated near the window so I had a good view of outside and the people passing.

Inside has a very nice relaxed feeling, and there is some Indian music playing in the background and like always I knew a few songs which was nice.

The Food…

PANEER PAKORA £4.25
HOME MADE PANEER INFUSED WITH A TAMARIND AND MINT CHUTNEY, DIPPED IN OUR GRAM FLOUR BATTER AND FRIED

IMG_5141

I have never tried this done this way, normally I would have Saag Paneer so this was going to be interesting.

It was OK, there wasn’t much flavour, using the added sauce this helped a lot.

I wouldn’t get this again, but I am glad I tried it to see what it was like.

Main Course

ALOO GOBI £4.75
MADE WITH POTATOES, CAULIFLOWER AND INDIAN SPICES

IMG_5146

I have had this before at Chaakoo Bombay Cafe long ago, and I loved it and its flavour so I thought I would have it here and see what is like.

For me the flavours were nice, but the cauliflower could have been chopped up a little more rather than one piece….this could me being a little too fussy?

Overall it was nice, but not as nice as the one I had in Chaakoo Bombay Cafe, I would try something else next time

Overall

Overall my first visit was a nice mixed visit.

I half enjoyed the food tonight, and the service was good but for me inside I found the atmosphere a little lacking….but that could just be me or tonights experience.
