Dockyard Social Event (Glasgow) : Review

V: 26th October 2018.    W:

While I was at work I got an email in my inbox, and it was an invite to come to a place called the Dockyard Social for a blogger event. The Dockyard is a place I had heard the name a few times, but to be honest not really much about it.

The Dockyard was on my list to visit, so I kindly accepted the invite and added it to my calendar.

Dockyard Social is a new street food and bar hub near Finnieston, close to the SECC, Hydro and the West End.

After work, I made my way over to the Dockyard…

First Impressions :

When my taxi arrived outside I was thinking to myself “is this the right place”, it looked like a big warehouse….so this was interesting.

On entering the building wow it was massive and very cool inside.

Tonight apart from the blogger event, there was a Halloween event happening so that’s why it has all the funky spooky items everywhere.

We were given a welcome cocktail which was very nice, one was Melon (not a fan) and the other looked interesting as it had a syringe….yup that’s the one I went for.

While enjoying my cocktail, I took a walk around seeing what food stalls were here.

These food stalls are always here, and what a variety you get to pick from. You have so many options, you have to have a little something from a few. I am not sure if they are always here, or if the vendors change to give you constant variety.

Plus there was a few more, but it was very busy and I didn’t get a chance to take photos.

It was now time to have something to eat, as I was very hungry so this was going to be a tough choice as there was so many nice items to pick from today.

The Food..

Tonight I opted to get two items, one from one stand and one from another.

NomNam : Korean Fried Chicken Wings £5

Well, these looked and smelled very nice, now it was time to taste.

WOW, these were very good….and VERY messy but worth every bite and mess all over my fingers and mouth. The flavour was really good and very moreish.

Value for money was REALLY good, and if you visit Dockyard do try these.

Lit : Salt & Szechuan Pepper Chicken Wrap £5

This was on my list to try all night, as it sounded so good.

Firstly all this for £5 wow really good, and the smell was amazing.

Every bite of this was really good, the flavour of the chicken with everything else was perfect.

I noticed that they did cocktails, and all of them sounded very good

This is a very cool place, and if you follow them on their Dockyard Social Facebook Page you will see they do many fun events.

I will definitely be going back as it was a very good evening, and the atmosphere was really fun.

Street food is fast becoming one of the most popular ways to eat out in Glasgow and having Dockyard on the scene just makes it even easier to have your Street Food fix.

Please do take a visit here to one of the event, its a very cool place with really good street food.

See you guys soon and thanks again 🙂

Taisteal (Edinburgh) : Review

Child-Friendly: Yes (well-behaved kids)       Accepts: Cash & Card

The guys at Taisteal were kind enough to invite me for dinner, to try the food so I made a date and visited. Taisteal is a family run restaurant, that uses locally sourced high-quality Scottish ingredients.

I visit Edinburgh probably around twice maybe three times a year, I do this every year as its nice to have a little day trip here every now and then.

Normally when I visit Edinburgh I stay in the main areas, so when I saw the address of Taisteal I had to use Google Maps to find it. To be honest here is very easy to find, and I am so glad they invited me as I wouldn’t have seen how nice this location is.

This area that Taisteal is situated in is very nice, its got a really nice look and feel to it and many nice little shops….its worth a visit if you’re coming to Edinburgh.

After a little walk about this area, now it was time to go to the restaurant.

This was a very nice looking restaurant inside, I loved the feel and atmosphere plus there was music in the background but at a very good level where you can actually hear the people you’re sitting with.

I was given both the main menu plus the market menu to choose from….now it was time to pick something.

To be honest this was very difficult to do, as most of the main dishes sounded very good.

I opted for off the main menu…

While waiting I was brought some bread and butter. I was told by the staff that the butter was smoked, to be honest, I never had smoked butter before so this would be interesting.

The bread was nice, and the butter was interesting.

Its hard to actually describe the taste, it was nice but I am not sure its something I would have again but it was an interesting taste.

The Food…

Caramelised Cauliflower & Coconut Soup £6.00 (Tonight £n/a)

I am not a soup person, which is why you never really see me have it.

Tonight I saw this on the menu, and to be honest with you the sound of it sounded very nice and interesting so I had to try it.

Going by the photo the bowl is deeper, and you get a good portion.

The taste for this was so so so good!!!! it was a nice thick creamy soup with an amazing taste.

Main Course

Pan-Fried Hake, Crab Cannelloni, Courgettes, Brown Butter Crumb £16 (Tonight £n/a)

As I said at the start of this review, I found it very difficult to make a choice for my main as a few dishes sounded so good…..but I opted for the fish.

Fish is something again I don’t really go for, so I thought let’s have a change and try it.

I started with the Crab Cannelloni, the flavours were good and it was nice and tender.

Next was the Hake, normally I avoid fish due to bones but I didn’t have any in this. The fish broke apart with ease, and had a nice hint of lemon and was very nice.

Everything was cooked perfectly about this dish.

There is always room for a dessert…

Salted Caramel Baked Alaska £6.5 (Tonight £n/a)

On arrival, I noticed it had nuts sprinkled around it, which I can’t take so I pushed them to one side and dug in.

Mmmmm this was so good and a perfect end to a perfect night.

Well, I am very happy I got tonights invite, firstly I found a part of Edinburgh that I never have been to and really liked and also found a great restaurant! Just like always guys even though this meal was free, its a 100% honest review.

I really liked here, the prices are ok if you consider the quality of the ingredients used and how good it tastes. As I also mentioned at the start, if the main prices are a little too costly for you….they do have a market menu which is a great price for this amazing food.

For me, Edinburgh has many places to eat, but most are just ok. Taisteal is now on my top spots to eat in Edinburgh and I will be recommending it to everyone when they visit Edinburgh.

Thanks again Taisteal for the invite!!!

See you soon.

The guys at La Laterna were lovely to invite me to their 1-year birthday party, and I couldn’t miss this as I love Italian food and it sounded fun.

I have been here several times but only ever done one review (you can view it here).

For me, up until last time, it was just so-so, and my last visit was nice. Don’t get me wrong, I am not sure why I felt this way but it was just how I felt so I was looking forward to going back and trying the food again.

Tonight we were told there would be food to sample, tapas style which was in keeping with the new menu and some cocktails plus music….this sounded like a fun night.

Inside is very cosy, it’s not the biggest restaurant but has a really nice atmosphere.

The Food

The food was served up in a buffet style which was perfect for tonight’s party, that way everyone could help themselves to what they wanted and how much

I was told tonight that here was changing their menu to be Italian Tapas, which I think is a good idea as its becoming a very popular trend.

They brought out round 1 of the food, so I headed up and took a little of everything.

Round 2

Round 3 & 4

Round 4

As you can see everyone tonight was spoiled, and very very well fed.

The food tonight some will be found on the new menu, and some were just for tonight. Due to this, I will tell you the ones I liked from the above.

I narrowed it down to my top 5 from tonight.

The first looked like a small calzone, and it basically was and the flavour was so so good!!! so good I had to have 3 🙂 Next was Arancini and WOW so so good again!! the flavours were perfect and again I was a little greedy and had 3 🙂

The pasta came out near the end and it was worth the wait, there were three types I only sampled two. One was a meatball pasta and one was a crab/prawn pasta, both the flavours were perfect and very very moreish.

Overall :

I am very impressed with everything tonight, and more so the food! The last few times I have been here I enjoyed the food but thought it was just ok…..tonight really changed my mind and can’t wait to come back to try more of the new menu.

I am very happy I got this invite and could be part of the celebration with everyone tonight, congratulations to everyone and thanks again 🙂

See you soon!!

Grazie mille
