Old Saltys (WestEnd, Glasgow) : Review

337 Byres Rd
G12 8UQ

Visit Date :  9th April 2017

This restaurant was added recently to my list to visit, and was visited just as fast as it was added.

I am not that big on fish and chips, I normally order a Haggis Supper or Sausage Supper if I get anything from the Chippie.

I did see they did other dishes so I knew I would find something on the menu that would be good to order.

First Impressions :

On entering the first thing you see is where they cook the food, and instantly hit with tone of amazing smells and visual delights.

We were shown upstairs to our table.

Upstairs is a very cosy environment, as you can see from the photos above. I would have liked to have been seated next to the window, but at the time I visited they were all occupied.

Main :

The Fish Burger £ 9.95
Breaded cod goujons stacked high with onion rings, calamari rings, and tartare sauce.

I decided to order the fish burger, that way I could try some fish and also taste the chips.

I started trying the chips, they come without any salt on them and freshly made. They were very nice without any salt, and they were nice with salt so I was very impressed with them.

The burger was a mouthful, it was very nice but I found it to be very dry. I had to put sauce on it and keep putting it on, it was nice but that was the only issue I had.

The onion and calamari rings were amazing, normally not a fan of onion rings as they come back on me and they are too strong but these were amazing.

Overall :

Overall my first visit was good, I enjoyed the food and the atmosphere.

I don’t think I would have the fish burger again, I would try something else on the menu.

See you soon.

My Day Trip to Dumbarton Castle

Castle Road
G82 1JJ

Visit Date : Wednesday 19th April 2017

Cost : £5.00 per adult

The last time I was at any castle, would have been when I was in primary school so I was looking forward to talking a walk around the castle and seeing the sights.

I was very lucky today as the weather started out very dull and part of me thought it would rain, but it turned out to be a very nice day as you can see from some of the photos.

First stop some fuel before the castle…..

We visited a little cafe called The Little Coffee Shop and Sandwich Bar.

94 Glasgow Road
G82 1JP

The cafe has a nice cosy, warm and relaxing look and atmosphere.

On entry we were welcomed and took a table, we were then given menu’s and took a few minutes to decided what to have before our long walk around the Castle.

I decided to order a Cappuccino and a roll and bacon, I didn’t want to fill myself up too much as my girlfriend prepared lunch for both of us.

I could have easily had a few of the cakes as they looked really good, but I thought I better be good.

I didn’t take note of the costs, but it was about standard prices for these items.

If I was ever back in Dumbarton I would return here to try a few other things, and some of the cakes as they looked really nice.

Onward to the Castle…

When we came out the cafe the Castle was only about a 10min walk, so we just took our time and enjoyed the sun that was starting to come out.

I took many many photos but I will only add a small amount, so you can see some of the locations I visited.

The castle has many many steps, so if you are not able to do a lot of walking then maybe this Castle isn’t for you. If you don’t mind lots of steps, then you will be treated to some amazing views and a lot of history.

As you’re walking about the grounds of the castle, you will come across several points of interest these include a prison, where they stored the gun powder etc etc I didn’t expect to find as many as I did.

There are also educational post markers about, where you learn a little about this specific area e.g. one was feeling how heavy a bucket was as this was to represent how heavy it would have been when they were carrying water around the castle.

The land is kept in very good condition, and I saw they are always working on it to keep it really nice, clean and tidy.

The main areas that you will visit when you are here, thats if you manage all the stairs are :

  1. Bower Battery : This is where cannons once controlled the route up the Clyde
  2. White Tower Crag : This is the highest part of the Rock at 74m high, where you get a 360 view.
  3. Guard House : The 16th Century Guard House
  4. Crane Bastion : Built to raise stores and munitions to the summit from the ground
  5. French Prison : As the name suggests it held French Prisoners during the Napoleonic Wars
  6. Powder Magazine : Use to keep gun powder barrels

Plus as you are walking about, the views you are treated to is amazing.

Overall the visit was very nice, the weather today was really good which made that more enjoyable as if it was raining climbing all the stairs wouldn’t have been nice.

I would come back and see the castle again, firstly as it’s a nice cheap day out and also if it’s a nice day the views are amazing.

As I said just a nice short post on my visit, if you want more historical details check out the website or go and visit….or even both.

Charcoals (Glasgow) : Review

Child Friendly: Yes (well behaved kids)      Accepts: Cash & Card

My last visit to Charcoals must have been around a year to a year and a half. I used to come here loads, then I stopped going but only because I started to think about being a food blogger and started preparing ideas for a blog.

Every time I went in the past the service was great, the food was great and the staff were always very very friendly.

I was recently approached by Charcoals to come and have a meal, so I checked my calendar and made a booking.

On entering I was greeted with a familiar face, one of the staff from my last visit was still here so it was nice to see him and also have a quick catch up (didn’t want to talk too long as I didn’t want to hold him back from his work).

After having a seat and taking in the atmosphere, the manager came over and we had a catch up and also talked about some charity work he has been doing in India. I will be doing a little post on his charity work soon, so please do keep watching as its very touching and also a good cause.

Looking about you can see a wall of all the awards this restaurant has won over the years, its amazing to see this amount.

My aim today was to catch up with the manager, and come back for some good food. I had in my mind that I would have 1 starter and 1 main……that didn’t really go to plan as you will see.

You will notice that I haven’t included any prices in this post, as the manager was very very very kind to give me my meal for free. I like freebies as much as everyone else, but its not something I aim for. When you see the amount of food I got today I had to leave a good tip, which I did.

I will start with the items I ordered, then move on to the ones the manager brought out for me to try.

All the thoughts and comments on the food below, are not in anyway swayed by this so what you read is my true review.

Starter :

Before my starter some poppadoms and dips were served.

This for me is a perfect starter or little snack before the meal.

The poppadoms were really nice and had a great flavour.

Chana Chaat
Sweet ‘n’ sour chick peas with chaat masala

I had this the very last time I visited, so I wanted to do the same and see how it is.

Presentation was very nice as you can see from the photo, and I couldn’t wait to dig in to this.

This has been improved from my last visit, and I really enjoyed it. The flavours all complimented one another, and it wasn’t too spicy for me so loved it.

OK so this is where things got interesting….

Battered Chicken (Not on menu)

Basically its tender chicken done in breadcrumbs, and was a really nice dish. The sauce worked perfect with the chicken, and very filling.

Remember this dish isn’t on the menu.

Lamb Chops

I am not really a big lamb person, I have only had lamb very few times but I am a food blogger and I will always try anything put down to me (as long as its not salad).

I was very surprised at how much I liked this, the lamb meat was very tender and tasty. It wasn’t chewy which I liked, and had nice flavouring.

Mains :

Chicken Korma with rice
Mild and creamy – ideal for the milder palate

My favourite curry is a Korma, as its very mild and sweet.

This was very nice but could have done with a little more coconut flavour to it, but thats my personal taste.

Kulcha Naan

I have never hard this before normally I get a normal naan or pashwari naan, so it was good to try something different.

I really liked this, it was tasty and if at this point of the meal I wasn’t getting full I could have easily had all of it.

Mix Veg with Soya Bean

For me this was a very interesting dish, due to the flavour.

I couldn’t decide if I liked this or not, I did like the flavour but part of me was still not sure….random comment but this is exactly how I felt.

This was a very thick and heavy dish, so I am sure this and some rice would be a meal in itself.

I am not sure if its due to me being ready to explode with all this food I felt this way, maybe next time I will give this a second attempt.

Lamb Goldie

To be honest I didn’t actually get a chance to fully try this, but the little I did it was very nice and very flavoursome.

I would like to comment more but it was only a little, next visit I will try this and comment better.

……and breath and loosen the belt….

My return visit was a very good one. I enjoyed all the dishes tonight, I even had to take some home as I was so full.

The food just like last time is amazing, packed with flavour, presented nicely and very moreish.

I would like to thank Muhammed for the massive meal tonight, and compliments to him and the chef there. I felt very welcomed, and felt very very full.

I will be back soon as I really enjoyed the food, and I will try other dishes…..I promise!! Do check out Charcoals as you will have a great meal, and even try some of what I had and let me know what your thoughts on the dish are.
